Research Fellow on Robotic Drilling
Mechanical Engineering Sciences
Salary: £33,309 to £37,468 per annum
Post Type: Full Time
Closing Date: 23.59 hours BST on Sunday 19 June 2022
The post of Post-Doctoral Research Fellow is available at the Space Technology for Autonomous and Robotic systems Laboratory (STAR-LAB) within the School of Mechanical Engineering Science of the University of Surrey, on a contract for up to 12 months.
The successful candidates will contribute to research expertise of the STAR-LAB, and work on subsurface robotics in relation to locomotion and mobility design based on bio-inspired techniques. The postdoc is expected to develop lightweight drilling mechanism based on “wasp drill” technology invented at the STAR LAB, originally for space applications and in this project to transfer the space technology and apply to a new brand-new terrestrial drilling application. The researcher will also be responsible for testing and validation of the developed robotic prototype using the subsurface robotics testbeds hosted at the STAR LAB (https://www.surrey.ac.uk/school-mechanical-engineering-sciences/facilities/ai-robotics-facilities) and field trials.
The relevant research project involves collaborations with industrial partners (e.g. BT and Synthotech) and require formal reporting through publications and presentations on a regular basis within the project consortium.
The applicants should have a bachelor’s degree (2nd upper or above) and a PhD in relevant engineering disciplines. R&D experience in mechanical engineering and robotics is required. The position requires strong programming background (in CAD modelling, DEM/FEM analysis, etc), experimental hands-on abilities, and communication and team working skills.
For informal academic enquiries regarding the post, please contact the project PI Professor Yang Gao at firstname.lastname@example.org.
