Full-Time, Fixed-Term (until August 2025)
Applications are invited for the post of three-year, fixed-term Lecturer in Musicology in the School of Performing and Digital Arts at Royal Holloway, University of London, beginning on 1 September 2022.
This opportunity has been occasioned and funded by the award of a prestigious three-year British Academy/Wolfson Research Professorship to Professor Julian Johnson. The successful applicant will therefore undertake core teaching in historical musicology, as well as first-class research and administrative duties. They will help us build on the long-standing excellence of our Department of Music, as confirmed by the results of REF 2021; will further enhance quality and diversity in our current intellectual offering; and will demonstrate a commitment to cross-disciplinary working, outward-facing external engagement, and inclusive education/pedagogy.
You will hold a doctorate in Musicology or cognate discipline and have experience of university teaching and assessment at undergraduate level. Whilst teaching is expected all to take place in person and on campus, familiarity with hybrid teaching models is necessary. As a strong communicator and listener, you will be well equipped to teach general outline modules in musicology, as well as to contribute specialised teaching more closely aligned to your particular interests. While these may encompass any musical traditions and periods, we welcome applications from candidates who are able to contribute to Popular Music Studies, Digital Musicology, Black Music, or Early Music (pre-1600). The demonstrable ability to produce high quality research outputs during this fixed-term appointment is crucial. Some experience of administration and postgraduate teaching experience would enhance an application but is not required.
Applications are encouraged from scholars from diverse backgrounds, especially from those communities under-represented in academic musicology.
In return we offer a highly competitive rewards and benefits package including:
- Generous annual leave entitlement
- Training and Development opportunities
- Pension Scheme with generous employer contribution
- Various schemes including Cycle to Work, Season Ticket Loans and help with the cost of Eyesight testing.
- Free parking
The post is based in Egham, Surrey, where the College is situated in a beautiful, leafy campus near to Windsor Great Park and within commuting distance from London.
