Master, Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge
The Governing Body of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge invites expressions of interest from exceptional candidates to become the next Master of the College when the tenure of the current Master, Professor Richard Penty comes to an end in 2023.
Proud of its past, and ambitious for its future, Sidney Sussex College advances academic excellence through the ideas and experiences of a scholarly community drawn from across the world and brought together in the heart of Cambridge.
Sidney is first and foremost a place of outstanding education, research and scholarship. The Master’s role is to inspire and lead the fellowship, staff and students as together they fulfil this core mission.
In its next Master, the College is looking for an individual with experience of, and commitment to, collaborative leadership with a strong and demonstrable record of professional relationship-building. Whether drawing on a career inside or outside the education sector, the College seeks someone who is comfortable with change and who can bring imagination and strategic vision as Sidney rises to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
As the Head of House, the Master speaks for, and on behalf of, the College, advocating Sidney’s vision, values and priorities both inside and outside of the College. In seeking a Master who can communicate with clarity and with purpose, the Governing Body wishes to appoint an individual who can develop with donors and alumni a shared understanding of the ambitions and needs of the College.
The Master is a visible presence within College life, encouraging a sense of community, and cultivating an ethos of excellence and inclusion. Respectful of the diversity of views, backgrounds and life experiences of its members and staff, the College creates an open and welcoming environment in which to live, learn and work.
In its recruitment, Sidney Sussex is committed to providing equality of opportunity. Applications are welcome from candidates of all backgrounds particularly from those belonging to groups that are underrepresented among Cambridge Heads of House.
Governing Body expects to elect its candidate by the end of November 2022 with admission to the office of Master in September 2023.
