Research Fellow – School of Health and Social Care – Part-Time, FTC 16 Months

Edinburgh Napier University is looking to appoint a part-time (18.75 hours per week), Research Fellow for the UKONS Research Grant on a fixed term basis, based in the School of Health and Social Care.

The Role

In the UK control of substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) define chemotherapy as a hazardous substance. Therefore, it is imperative that employers assess the risk and take suitable precautions for their employees. The ‘Safe Handling of Cytotoxic Drugs in the workplace’ recommends a hierarchy of protection; closed systems and personal protection equipment to reduce the exposure to SACT. In the UK, closed systems are not mandatory, and the evidence base for use is inconclusive. The hazards of exposure can be assumed to mirror those for cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, with the toxicology effects reported include carcinogenicity, teratogenicity and mutagenicity.

Using the principles of framework analysis an exploratory mixed methods study is proposed to promote an overall in-depth understanding of the experiences and perceptions of CN’s of potential occupational exposure during handling, delivering, and caring for patients undergoing cytotoxic treatment for cancer in various care settings.

This individual would join an established research team and requires experience in systematic reviews, SPSSS and be able to conduct sensitive in-depth interviews virtually, with cancer nurses across the UK.

Who We Are Looking For

A highly motivated, dynamic, and enthusiastic individual who brings:

• Educated to MSc/ MRes/ Mphil level
• Dual experience in conducting both qualitative and quantitative data analysis
• Experience of working within an academic team working with participants on sensitive topics
• Experience with working with stakeholders and steering groups to disseminate findings and gain further insight to direct research
• Excellent IT skills, including experience of managing a range of social media platforms and conducting online interviews via the phone or MsTeams
• Knowledge of health care research, including methods and approaches
• Experience of publications
