Project description

Metamaterials are artificially engineered materials that have unique geometries and structures giving rise to interesting physical properties. They derive their properties from their microstructure rather than composition. The macroscale properties of these materials are determined by the small-scale topological design.

This PhD studentship will involve a combination of design and manufacturing of mechanical metamaterial, providing the students with a complete and holistic training and a diverse research experience.

The PhD candidate will participate in an exciting international research partnership with collaborators from various disciplines, cultures, and backgrounds. This project could be right for you if you enjoy learning and are looking for a new challenge at the forefront of new technology for a more sustainable future.

Motivated candidates with knowledge/interest in structural mechanics, experimental mechanics, design and experimentation are encouraged to apply. Any experience with experimental/computational metamaterial and composite would be beneficial.

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Dr Susmita Naskar, Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering Department.

This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic first or upper second class graduate in mechanical/aerospace/materials science to build strong knowledge in both structural and material science while building strong relationships with both academic and industrial areas at international level. The studentship also covers all UK or International (including EU) tuition fees.

Entry Requirements

A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).

Closing date: applications should be received no later than 31 August 2022 for standard admissions, but later applications may be considered depending on the funds remaining in place.

Funding: For UK students, Tuition Fees and a stipend of £16,062 tax-free per annum for up to 3.5 years.
