About the Role

Senior Legal Counsel in the Legal Services Group is a service focused, first point of contact for users of legal services within RMIT and supports the Deputy General Counsel and Associate Director to deliver high quality legal advice to clients within RMIT in a timely and customer focused manner.

The Senior Legal Counsel role requires maturity and sensitivity, combined with a strategic mindset, to manage and resolve challenging and complex issues, while building trust with key RMIT stakeholders. As a new role, the successful applicant will have scope to build their legal practice, and bring an innovative approach to inhouse dispute resolution. Our inhouse team is supportive and inclusive, and we aim for our legal services to be relevant and useful for our clients.

RMIT supports hybrid ways of working and will consider applicants wishing to work flexibly, full time or at a reduced load (0.8 - 0.9FTE).

To be successful in this position, you'll have:

  • A current practising certificate as an Australian lawyer under the Legal Profession Uniform Law.
  • Substantial experience working as a lawyer in the area of human resources and employment law (including discrimination law) and administrative law, in a customer-focused team.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders from a range of experience levels.
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering business-relevant and timely legal advice and outcomes through quality engagement with stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to operate with a high level of confidentiality in a diplomatic manner with the ability to lead and influence others.
  • Excellent oral, written, inter-personal and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously within a fast-moving team environment.
  • Positive, can-do attitude.
  • In-house legal experience is desirable, but not essential.
