Post-Doctoral Associate in Division of Engineering, Mechanical
The Vijay Laboratory in the Engineering Division, New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit a Post-Doctoral Associate for working in a multi-disciplinary project on “Development of soft tissue surrogate biomaterials using thermo-mechano-rheological properties for 3D-printed tissue engineering scaffold applications”. The position will be for 2 years, subject to satisfactory performance during the probationary period.
The successful applicant will drive a fascinating project that aims to develop a theoretical framework for soft materials to identify processing parameter windows to manufacture filaments and then 3Dprint them. The project will primarily involve thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) to 3D-print porous scaffolds, which will be characterized for material and mechanical properties, followed by in vitro cell culture studies with fibroblasts (skin cells). Artificial skin grafts for regenerative medicine, robotic or bionic skins, and disease models such as skin carcinoma for drug testing and personalized medicine are some of the futuristic applications of the proposed work. The work may be extended to ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) and thermoplastic silicones. The candidate will be involved in finite element analysis to investigate the mechanical and fluidic (permeability) properties. Material characterization of the fabricated structures will include scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Raman spectra, FTIR, etc. and mechanical testing will include tensile/compression testing and dynamic mechanical analyzer.
Applicants must have a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Polymer Engineering or related field, with a strong expertise in mechanics of materials (solid mechanics) and experience with 3D printing and finite element analysis. There will be learning opportunities on the job, including basic biological assays. The candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment consisting of PhD-level scientists, graduate students and undergraduate students and will interact with several scientists from other disciplines.
The terms of employment include highly competitive salary, medical insurance, housing allowance, and educational subsidies for children as well as other benefits. Applications will be accepted immediately and candidates will be considered until the position is filled. For consideration, applicants need to submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae with full publication list, transcript of degree, and contact information of three references and research statement, all in PDF format.
