Research Assistant, Department of Finance

Job Description

We are looking for one highly skilled and motivated individuals to work as a full-time data scientist/research assistant for a period of at least one year (ideally two years). The start date is subject to negotiation; we are looking for someone to start as soon as possible.

You will work with and be supervised by NUS Business School Professors Ben Charoenwong and Karsten Müller. The projects you will most likely be working on cover topics in empirical macro-finance (financial crises, credit booms), corporate finance (loan subsidies), and financial technology (disruptions to current banking systems and regulatory implications).

You will work with us on a variety of tasks, including data collection and analysis, managing large data sets, performing numerical simulations, statistical programming and data visualization, conducting literature reviews, summarizing research findings, and editing research papers. This position is ideal for individuals who want to get hands-on exposure to how rigorous analysis of economic and financial data is done in practice in an extremely dynamic and fast-changing environment. It will also be of interest to candidates who are planning to go to graduate school in economics, data science, finance, or a related field.

The position is based in Singapore. A successful candidate will be able to participate in the academic life at NUS, including the ability to attend research seminars and PhD courses. Qualifications & Requirements

Ideal candidates will:

  • have a strong quantitative background (incl. statistics and econometrics);
  • have strong programming skills (extensive experience with either Stata, R, or Python is a must);
  • be able to work independently to solve problems;
  • be well organized and pays attention to details; and
  • have a long-term interest in pursuing research in economics and or finance.

We welcome candidates from all backgrounds, including finance, economics, data science, computer science, statistics, and all related disciplines. Some background in economics can be a plus but is not required. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and self-directed, adept at learning new technical skills when needed.

  • Transcripts from all previous academic programs
  • If available, a research paper (undergrad thesis, term paper, etc.)
  • Sample of code (ideally for same paper)
