About This Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow to lead the hydrogeological research, training and consultancy services that CWiMI provides to the minerals industry in Australia and globally. The hydrogeologist will work with a team of water management specialists in CWiMI, contributing to a range of inter-disciplinary projects. The position will contribute to preparation of academic articles, HDR supervision, and industry-focussed training and research.

Key responsibilities include:

1. Research

  • Develop an independent and/or team research program to achieve national recognition and impact in the research area.
  • Produces quality research outputs consistent with discipline norms by publishing or exhibiting in national research journals, other appropriate refereed publications and conference publications, with a lead role in some outputs. At Level C, maintain an active record of producing quality research outputs as lead contributor.
  • Participate in or contribute as chief investigator role (often in conjunction with more experienced researchers) in applications for competitive research funding to support projects and activities, which includes actively seeking, obtaining and managing research funding. At Level C, act as Chief Investigator.
  • Work with colleagues in the development of joint research projects and applications for competitive research funding support.
  • Contribute to progressing towards transfer of knowledge, technology and practices to research end users through translation, including commercialisation of UQ intellectual property.
  • Review and draw upon best practice research methodologies.

At Level C:

  • Undertake independent and/or team research that where possible impacts on policy, practices and/or commercialisation resulting in national recognition and developing international recognition in the research area.
  • Encourage, initiate and coordinate strategic collaborative research projects in related area of expertise across University, national and international levels.

2. Supervision and Researcher Development

  • Demonstrate a track record of the effective supervision of Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students.
  • Demonstrates personal effectiveness in supervision and management and development of researcher capability and skill.
  • Facilitate (at Level C, lead the facilitation of) engagement opportunities for HDR supervisees
  • Effective lead and develop supervisee performance and conduct by providing feedback, coaching, and professional development.
  • Manage staff effectively throughout the employee lifecycle in accordance with University policy and procedures.
  • Working to promptly resolve conflict and grievances when they arise in accordance with University policy and procedures.
  • Act as Principal Supervisor to HDR students.
  • At Level C, demonstrates and leads others in the responsible conduct of research.

4. Citizenship and Service

  • Demonstrate behaviours that align to the UQ values.
  • Shows leadership of self and others through mentoring, collaboration and active participation in priority activities for the unit. At Level C, shows leadership through a responsibility for staff wellbeing.
  • Provide support to other academic positions and unit operations as needed during other team members absences.
  • Effectively and efficiently manage internal service roles and administrative processes as required, including participation in decision-making and service on relevant committees. At Level C, demonstrate a track record of achievement in relation to internal service roles, including a high level of collaborating and participation in decision making and service on relevant committees.
  • Collaborate in service activities external to the immediate organisation unit.
  • Actively pursue and develop external links and partnerships by cultivating relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community. At Level C, advance external links and sustain relationships.
  • At Level C, establish a track record of collaboration in relation to external service activities.

About You

  • Completion (or near completion) of a Doctoral degree in hydrogeology or closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrated research experience with a track record of publishing in scientific journals and evidence of successful research grant applications or research contract tenders.
  • At least 4 years work experience as a hydrogeologist, either in consultancy or in a university or other research organisation
  • Advanced understanding of hydrogeology concepts and groundwater hydrology processes, including:
    • Significant experience of interpreting hydrogeology and groundwater monitoring data for developing and assessing conceptual models; and specifying hydrogeological surveys and/or groundwater monitoring
    • Good understanding of the principles of groundwater numerical modelling and ideally, groundwater modelling experience (eg. MODFLOW)
  • A strong ethic of project delivery and reporting to specification.
  • Ability to work independently, cooperatively and effectively within a team environment
  • Evidence of building strategic relationships with researchers, industry, government, communities and other stakeholders leading to funding and collaborative opportunities.
  • Advanced communication skills including excellence in writing technical reports and effective communication with research partners and clients.
  • Responsible attitude to safe working practices, risk assessments and safety training.
  • A record of supervision of HDR students to successful completion.
  • Experience in meaningful internal service roles in conjunction with active contributions to external activities.

At Level C:

  • An established profile in research in the discipline area.
  • National recognition in the area of expertise, with an internationally developing profile and an established record of publications in reputed refereed journal and presenting at conferences.
  • A strong record of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing external research funding.
  • A solid record of supervision of HDR students to successful completion.
  • A growing record of meaningful internal service roles in conjunction with a strong contribution to external activities

What We Can Offer

This is a Full-time, Fixed-term position December 2024 at Academic Level B or C.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $101,533.66 - $143,415.50 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $118,794.38 - $167,796.14 per annum.
