The University of Surrey is an international University with a world-class teaching and research profile and an enterprising spirit. Our research seeks to address global challenges, drive innovation and deliver real-world impact. Surrey provides an exceptional teaching environment to inspire and empower our students for personal and professional success. Inventive and forward thinking, our heritage shows a recurring theme of doing things differently and achieving notable results. For example, we have won four Queen’s Anniversary Prizes, were awarded Gold for our Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) submission and host the UK’s newest accredited School of Veterinary Medicine. As a result of our strategic plan and future vision, the School of Biosciences and Medicine in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences is continuing to invest in molecular and genomic microbial sciences and wishes to appoint a motivated individual to a Lectureship in Bacteriology to continue to add to the successes of the School, Faculty and University.

This post constitutes an important addition to the School which houses four departments that are home to over 100 academic staff. In the most recent UK Research Excellence Framework (REF2021) 91% of our research was ranked as world-leading or internationally excellent and we were ranked 6th out of 89 institutions for Research Power in Allied Health research”. We are now seeking new talent to complement our existing strengths and bring their own expertise and excellence to help deliver future research success. This new post is designed to enable a high potential career academic to take the next step in their research career, supported with a start-up fund to resource a 3 year PhD studentship.

The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences has an ambitious plan to expand the international impact of our One Health research, maximising interdisciplinary research across University Faculties and with University Partners. The first stage of this is to consolidate and broaden our existing excellence in microbiology and infectious disease research by recruiting a new Lecturer in Bacteriology who will build a research programme in areas of research that could include AMR, enteric bacteria, zoonoses, microbiome and/or microbial genomics. Applications from individuals with experience as a professional Biomedical Scientist would be welcomed. The post holder will have a remit to cross disciplinary boundaries through their research portfolios and teaching.

You will demonstrate success at Surrey through applying for and obtaining external funding, through high quality publications and impact, contributing to the teaching of aspects of bacteriology and related subjects, along with supervision of doctoral students. Successful applicants will have a PhD in a relevant subject and a record of achievement in bacteriology and be capable of forging appropriate networks locally, nationally and internationally.

In return, we offer an energetic and forward-thinking working environment with access to a variety of staff development opportunities. You will also receive a competitive salary and a generous annual leave entitlement, USS pension scheme and discounted membership to the Surrey Sports Park. The University is easily accessible by road and rail and is a short distance from both Heathrow and Gatwick airports.

Informal enquiries can be made to the Head of Microbial Sciences, Professor Mark Chambers, by email (m.chambers@surrey.ac.uk). For details on the benefits of working with us, and to apply on-line please visit our website.

We acknowledge, understand and embrace diversity and the School of Biosciences and Medicine is proud to be the recipient of the Equality Challenge Unit Athena SWAN Silver award.
