Clinical psychology Doctorate training Programme

• Salary range depending on experience

As a result of the considerable expansion in Clinical Psychology Doctoral training, at Surrey, we have exciting opportunities for a number of clinicians to join the Surrey PsychD programme. These posts offer a range of possibilities to contribute to the programme depending on your experience and the time you would like to commit to the role. The current team are a welcoming, innovative and a cohesive group with a wide variety of clinical and research interests and expertise. We have an outstanding reputation for applied psychology training and research. We will be welcoming 60 new trainees in the Autumn following earlier increases which has meant we are redesigning the organisational structure of the programme to ensure we can provide a positive learning experience for the trainees providing a focus on year group staff focus as well as the whole programme.

The programme was re-accredited by the BPS, and has been commended for the innovative clinical pathways we have included within the programme. Alongside their clinical doctorate, all trainees leave the course with Foundation accreditation with the Association of Family therapy. We also have two additional clinical pathways available for trainees to opt-in to: (1) a BABCP CBT pathway, which enables trainees to leave with Level 2 BABCP accreditation from BABCP, and (2) a Neuropsychology pathway, endorsed by the Bristol Postgraduate diploma In Theoretical and Practical Clinical neuropsychology, which allows access to the Neuropsychology Specialist Register on qualification. The BPS accreditation team also recognised our commitment to involving experts by Experience in all aspects of the programme.

The programme team have been actively working with colleagues to develop ways to decolonise the curriculum and to increase our reach into Black and Asian communities to highlight and support the possibility of a career in clinical psychology and importantly at Surrey. We developed a specific curriculum group to help us reorientate the programme to recognise the contribution of other cultural psychologies. These posts offer an in an opportunity to join the team to contribute to how we change training and practice to reflect the needs of our communities locally and nationally. We have launched two research groups to focus our research activity: Applied Clinical and Health Psychology and Social Justice and Inequalities in Mental Health.

The ideal candidates will be confident in their clinical and leadership skills, passionate about their topic and keen to share this knowledge with others. They will share the Team philosophy of enabling trainees to become the best clinical psychologist possible and be able to guide them in realising their own professional ambitions. The candidate will have a doctorate degree in clinical or counselling psychology, will be registered with HCPC and have worked within the NHS. Applicants with expertise in CBT/systemic psychotherapy and/or working with adults in later life would be welcomed. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the development of trainees’ clinical competencies as well as the academic and organisational elements of the programme. Depending on interest the postholder will also be invited to contribute to one of the research groups and support the research undertaken by the trainees.
