The BISC is recruiting a full-time lecturer in Chemical Sciences to deliver our first-year undergraduate course, CHEM 112: General Chemistry, and to oversee the safety and smooth running of our teaching laboratory. CHEM 112 is at approximately the same level as A-Level Advanced Chemistry, with a strong emphasis on experiential and active learning. We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and engaging lecturer who is committed to high-quality teaching and to creating a fully inclusive and positive learning environment in a unique study abroad setting with highly ambitious students. We welcome applications from early career academics or experienced postsecondary teachers. The teaching months are September to April and six weeks between May and June and the successful candidate will be expected to use non-teaching months to prepare the curriculum and laboratory for the next academic year. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will be likely to work longer hours during the teaching term and fewer hours between terms. Use of the laboratory over the summer for personal research can be negotiated.

Duties include:

  • Teach CHEM 112: General Chemistry between September and April; ensure students are provided with a high-quality teaching and learning experience with a high standard of academic and personal support to ensure the best possible levels of satisfaction and achievement Oversee good practice and smooth running of the laboratory; ensure that all health and safety procedures are understood and followed correctly; ensure that equipment is properly cleaned, and that chemicals and other materials are appropriately stored; manage the stock control of chemicals and equipment. Supervise students in directed undergraduate research projects or activities, as assigned.

Key deliverables/objectives: To provide effective instruction and academic support for students, enabling them to achieve to the best of their ability. Contribute to the academic life; support academic excellence and contribute to the University’s strategic goals.

Person specifications include:

  • Post graduate degree or equivalent professional qualification in a field suitable for the post Successful teaching record in the subject area; demonstrable experience of formative and summative assessment of learning outcome Experience of supervising the running of a teaching laboratory, including health and safety and stock control. Ability to pass enhanced DBS check.
