The Department hosts one of the largest research groups in Europe dedicated to observational and theoretical cosmology, extragalactic astronomy and advanced instrumentation. The Durham group is ranked joint-sixth in the world in terms of our research impact. The successful candidate will join the Institute for Computational Cosmology. In November 2016 the Institute for Computational Cosmology, Centre for Extragalactic Astronomy and the Centre for Advanced Instrumentation moved into the new Ogden Centre for Fundamental Physics building designed by the world renowned Studio Daniel Libeskind.

The Role

This is a 50 percent FTE position for 2 years starting in the Autumn of 2022 to work on projects based on constrained realization dark matter and hydrodynamics simulations of the local universe. The post holder will work with Professor Carlos Frenk and other members of the ICC. The candidate will be expected to display the initiative and creativity, together with the appropriate skills and knowledge, required to take a lead in the research under the direction of the grant holder using cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation to gain understanding of the main processes of galaxy formation in the local universe and key observational signatures that can be used to distinguish between models.

  • To conduct individual and collaborative research projects under the direction of the grant holder (Professor C. S. Frenk)
  • To work with the grant holder and other colleagues in the research group, as appropriate to develop new research methods and extend the research portfolio.
  • To publish high quality outputs, including papers for submission to peer reviewed journals and papers for presentation at conferences and workshops.
  • To understand and convey material of a specialist or highly technical nature to the team or group of people through presentations and discussions that leads to the presentation of research papers in conferences and publications.
  • To prepare and deliver presentations on research outputs/activities to audiences which may include: research sponsors, academic and non-academic audiences.
  • To assist with the development of research objectives and proposals.
  • To deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines by discussing with grant holder and offering creative or innovative solutions.
  • To liaise with research colleagues and make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding to form relationships for future research collaboration.
  • To plan and manage own research activity, research resources in collaboration with others and contribute to the planning of research projects.
  • To deliver training in research techniques/approaches to peers, visitors and students as appropriate.
  • To be involved in student supervision, as appropriate, and assist with the assessment of the knowledge of students.
  • To engage in citizenship to support the department and wider discipline.
  • To engage in continuing professional development by participation in the undergraduate or postgraduate teaching programmes or by membership of departmental committees, etc. and by attending relevant training and development courses.   
  • In addition, you will carry out one or more of the following:
    • The development and/or analysis of computer simulations
    • Theoretical research in cosmology
    • The analysis and/or interpretation of data from astronomical surveys

This post is 50 percent FTE fixed term for 2 years from the start date.

Although the post is intended for research based on constrained realization simulations of the local universe, the post holder will be able to carry out independent research in his/her own right, ideally in areas related to the main topic of the project in coordination with the PI. The expectation is that they will contribute to the advancement of the project, through the development of their own research ideas/adaptation and development of research protocols.

Successful applicants will, ideally, be in post by September 1st 2022.

The Requirements


  1. Qualifications
    • A good first degree in physics, astrophysics, cosmology, or a related subject.
    • A PhD in astrophysics, cosmology, or a related subject.
  2. Experience
    • Experience in conducting high-quality academic research in the area of extragalactic astronomy and/or cosmology using  theoretical and computational techniques
    • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals, commensurate with stage of career.
    • Demonstrable ability to write material of a quality commensurate with publication in highly-ranked journals.
    • Demonstrable ability to present research papers at national/international conferences and communicate complex information to specialists and within the wider academic community.
    • Experience in studies of the physics of galaxy formation
    • Experience in studies of Galactic dynamics
    • Experience in parallel computing
    • Experience in executing and analysing high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation.
  3. Skills
    • Demonstrable ability to work cooperatively as part of a team, including participating in research meetings.
    • Ability to work independently on own initiative and to strict deadlines.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    • To contribute to fostering a collegial working environment which is inclusive and welcoming and where everyone is treated fairly with dignity and respect.

    • Demonstrable ability to develop research proposals and designs in collaboration with other academics.
    • Experience of overseeing students with respect to the development of their practical/research skills e.g., acting as a demonstrator; supervising student projects.
  2. Skills
    • Demonstrable ability to plan and manage independent research.
