The School of Biological Sciences at Queen’s University Belfast, is currently seeking to appoint an exceptional candidate to the post of Research Fellow.

The Research Fellow will be based in the McVeigh and Atkinson laboratories in the School of Biological Sciences, funded by an Academy of Medical Sciences Springboard grant. The Project will focus on the discovery and profiling of extracellular RNAs in parasitic nematode infections. Candidate will lead a programme of research aimed at developing new understanding of extracellular RNAs secreted by Strongyloides parasites in animal hosts, with a view to discovery of new diagnostic biomarkers and/or parasite control options.

This post is available on a fixed term contract for 12 months. 

The successful candidate must have and your CV/Cover letter (or application form) should clearly demonstrate you have:     

  • Degree in Biological Sciences or a related subject area
  • Have or be about to obtain/submit a PhD in Molecular Parasitology or related subject area
  • At least 3 years relevant research experience in helminth parasitology research
  • Demonstrable evidence of research experience in:
    • Molecular parasitology
    • RNA-Seq data analysis
    • Bioinformatics of parasite genomes/transcriptome
  • Hold a current Home Office Personal License, and have demonstrable experience in maintaining Strongyloides parasite infections in rodents
  • Sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in molecular parasitology and of relevant research methods and techniques (e.g. PCR, qPCR, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, bioinformatics, parasite recovery/maintenance/culture).

Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but in particular circumstances may be renewed or made permanent subject to availability of funding.
