About the opportunity

The Faculty of Medicine and Health, the largest division of the university, is dedicated to attracting and developing the brightest minds in health education and research to make and shape the future of health. Sydney Dental School is ranked amongst the top dental schools globally and is one of the largest dental schools in Australia. It is housed within the Sydney Dental Hospital at Surry Hills and the Westmead Centre for Oral Health at Westmead Hospital with outreach across NSW.

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding senior academic as Professor or Associate Professor of Special Needs Dentistry and Gerodontology, in partnership with the Sydney Local Health District (SLHD). Global demand for dental treatment in patients with special needs is increasing, especially as older population retain and rehabilitate their dentition. There is a place in the dental health system for specialists in Special Needs Dentistry (SND), which currently encompasses Gerodontology, due to the increasing demand for specialist services among dental patients with special needs and growing number of the elderly. The position requires an academic leader who will provide vision and focus to build a strong SND and Gerodontology teaching and research team to advance the mission of the school. Responsibilities include oversight for all SND and Gerodontology teaching, research and administrative activities of the subject area and the whole discipline, provision of SND and Gerodontology at SLHD while leading DClinDent (Special Needs Dentistry) program, and supervision of students enrolled in this program.

About you (skills, capabilities and experience)

The successful candidate will be a PhD qualified academic in a relevant field of study, registered or eligible for registration as a dentist and specialist in Special Needs Dentistry with the Dental Board of Australia. You must also possess a DDS/DMD degree or equivalent along with eligibility for temporary license in NSW. The successful candidate will possess a national or international reputation in Special Needs Dentistry and/or Gerodontology, with a supporting research profile including competitive research grants, publications and evidence of recognition within the broader research community. The successful candidate will have a distinguished record of academic teaching excellence, as evidenced through successful student outcomes, demonstrated impact on student learning, recognition through awards/prizes and innovation. You will have demonstrated experience in people leadership and an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the key strategic issues in the higher education sector, including demonstrated success in supervising and/or mentoring others towards success. The successful candidate will have an understanding of and ability to lead, develop and support an academic endeavour from curriculum design to producing leading research, providing a student enabling environment.

The successful applicant must have a wide network of established relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders, that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of the discipline, school, faculty and University.

Term and remuneration

The successful candidate will be offered a 5-year fixed-term position on a full-time basis, with the possibility for renewal subject to assessment of performance. The appointment is subject to completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees.

The successful candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate's relevant experience and qualifications.
