About the position:

  • Research Professor and Deputy Director
  • Institute for Evidence-Based Healthcare
  • Full time, fixed term appointment for 8 years
  • Initial appointment as the Institute's Deputy Director progressing to appointment as Director

This rare opportunity will be offered to an outstanding leader and researcher for an initial eight year appointment with the intention of extension if agreed performance outcomes are met.

The Institute for Evidence-Based Healthcare (IEBH) delivers world-class research, engagement and training that serves as a national and international resource for scholars, clinicians, system leaders, patients and families to improve evidence-based healthcare. The effective integration of research into practice advances the health and healthcare of Australians, influences health policy, improves global health outcomes, and enhances Bond's reputation as Australia's leading private, independent, not-for-profit University.

Established in 2010 as the Centre for Research in Evidence-Based Practice (CREBP), the Institute engages a globally connected team of highly skilled researchers and educators who also provide advisory services. These services aim to guide individuals and groups to consider ways to provide sustainable, evidence-based healthcare, and how research can better inform policy. The Institute's main base is within the Health Science & Medicine Building, but includes an Evidence Based Practice Unit located at the Gold Coast University Hospital.

The Institute has developed innovative education and world-leading research initiatives and we are seeking the next generation of leadership to support us in building on and delivering these products to the global community. This is a long-term role for a highly experienced and energetic academic leader.

About the person:

  • World class researcher
  • Strategic thinker
  • Organisational leader

The Research Professor and Deputy Director is expected to exercise a special responsibility in providing leadership in their field/discipline and profession, within the Institute for Evidence-Based Healthcare, the University, and the community. They should make a distinguished personal contribution and foster excellence in research, university service, staff management, professional activities, commerce and/or policy development within the University.

This appointment will contribute to the leadership, management, and strategic direction of the Institute, as well as leading a program of clinical research that aligns with the major Institute themes of evidence-based care, non-drug interventions, antimicrobial resistance, and improving research quality. Responsibility will be to support the Institute Director to manage and lead teams across the diverse research and contract portfolios of the Institute both at Bond University and at the Institute's Evidence-Based Practice Professorial Unit within the Gold Coast Hospital & Health Service (GCHHS). The portfolio includes the current streams of work in research and education, and new portfolios of research and teaching, contracting and advisory services, and philanthropy. Research responsibilities also include support for Institute personnel and students.

Reporting directly to the Director of the Institute, the Research Professor and Deputy Director is a significant role that requires research, academic and business leadership skills and experience. The Institute's vision for the Research Professor and Deputy Director is to play a leadership role that will continue to build momentum and drive a culture of growth, advance research capacity and performance, and increase our financial independence.

In the context of intended retirement of the Institute Director Professor Paul Glasziou AO at the end of 2024, the successful applicant would be expected to transition into the role of Institute Director and  lead this globally influential team into the future. Appointment to the role of Director will be subject to a range of pre-agreed conditions including research and team outcomes, engagement, partnerships, success in competitive grants and other aligned contract, teaching, and research opportunities.

The Research Professor and Deputy Director will primarily be located at Bond University Campus, Robina but will spend part of their time at the Gold Coast University Hospital, Southport.
