About the position 

At the Department of Architecture and Technology (IAT) there are two vacancies for a 2 year 100 %-position as a postdoctoral researcher within experimental analysis and numerical simulation of advanced building envelope systems. One of the two positions will have strong links and collaboration with the Department of Energy and Process Engineering (EPT) at NTNU. Both the positions are linked to an EU-funded project which includes around thirty research and industrial partners with whom continuous collaboration during the engagement period is foreseen.

One of the two positions will have a research focus on experimental methods and monitoring of the performance of advanced building envelope systems in terms of indoor environment and energy use and conversion. The other positions will instead have a focus on numerical modelling and simulation of envelope systems, both at component level and at building integration level. The two postdoctoral fellows are expected to have daily collaboration and to have complementary competences that together cover the entire spectrum of knowledge and know how to support the design, assessment, and optimisation of building envelope systems across multiple performance domains.

The Department of Architecture and Technology and the Department of Energy and Process Engineering, together with the partner institution SINTEF Community, have a large range of research facilities that will be used in the project, and both the positions will help to strengthen the development of these facilities (including the development of digital twins).

A postdoctoral fellowship position is a temporary position where the main goal is to qualify for work in senior academic positions.

You will report to the Head of Department when it comes to personal and general professional aspects. You will report to the Project manager (at both IAT and EPT) when it comes to scientific and project-related aspects.

Duties of the position

For the postdoctoral fellow with focus on experimental methods and monitoring:

  • Design, install, and maintain data acquisition systems for environmental, atmospheric, thermophysical, and energy (thermal and electric) measurements in both laboratory facilities (e.g. test-cells, climate simulator) and in in-field like facilities (e.g. living laboratories).
  • Design and execute laboratory tests for the characterisation of thermophysical, optical, environmental and energy conversion performance of building envelope components and systems
  • Design and execute in-field tests for the multi-domain characterisation of building envelope components and systems, including subjective data from the user.
  • Post-process experimental data, analyse and summarise the performance using suitable methods and key performance indicators.
  • Support simulations and numerical model validation with processing of experimental data and data acquisition system design targeting real-time interaction between measurements systems and simulation workflow (digital twin).
  • Participation in project meetings and reporting of activities (including project reports).
  • Participation in dissemination and communication activities, including development of scientific publications, workshops/training/courses related to experimental methods and monitoring of building envelope systems.

For the postdoctoral fellow with focus on numerical methods and simulation:

  • Support the design and optimisation of advanced building envelope systems with numerical modelling and simulation of the different phenomena occurring at both component and building integration level.
  • Design and develop simulation workflows that can integrate multiple performance domains (e.g. thermophysical, energy conversion, environmental impact over the life-cycle, life-cycle costs) with the aim to carry out multi-objective optimisation of building envelope systems.
  • Support the development of digital twins of experimental facilities (e.g. test cells, living laboratories) by designing and developing the real-time simulation infrastructure of the cyber-physical system.
  • Post-process simulation data, analyse and summarise the performance using suitable methods and key performance indicators.
  • Participation in project meetings and reporting of activities (including project reports).
  • Participation in dissemination and communication activities, including development of scientific publications, workshops/training/courses related to experimental methods and monitoring of building envelope systems.

Required selection criteria

For both the postdoctoral fellow positions:

  • You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD
  • You must have a professionally relevant background in Engineering or Architecture, with a particular focus on building science
  • You must have previous experience with both experimental measurement and numerical modelling/simulation in the context of building science
  • You must be open to work in the context of a large research project, with international collaborations and interactions with many university and industrial partners
  • You must be able to take initiative and manage, with minimum daily supervision, project meeting and project reporting activities
  • You must have experience with scientific article writing and participation in different dissemination activities, e.g. conference presentations. Experience with externally funded research projects is an advantage.
  • Fluent written and oral English.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant  

Preferred selection criteria

For the postdoctoral fellow with focus on experimental methods and monitoring:

  • Proved experience in design of data acquisition systems for building envelope research, including experience on integrated monitoring and control systems
  • Proved experience in experimental characterization of advanced building envelope systems with particular focus on thermophysical, atmospheric, fluid mechanical, optical, energy conversion phenomena
  • Proved experience in in-field monitoring of either building envelope performance or indoor environmental quality
  • Proved experience in experimental methods design and optimization of experimental runs
  • Previous experience in applications of statistical methods for data analysis
  • Previous experience in use of general programming language for data processing
  • It is considered an advantage if you are able to communicate in Norwegian, or another Scandinavian language

For the postdoctoral fellow with focus on numerical methods and simulation:

  • Proved experience in modelling and simulation of building envelope systems and/or building energy/environmental system in the context of building performance simulation
  • Proved experience in use of experimental data for model verification/validation/calibration and correlated techniques
  • Previous experience with as EnergyPlus, and its implementation with open-source plug-ins in the Grasshopper/Rhino environment is of advantage
  • Proved understanding of data acquisition systems, experimental data processing, building automation and control systems
  • Proved experience in general programming language for different tasks, from physical-mathematical modelling to data processing, and automation of simulation runs; fluency with Phyton is of advantage
  • Previous experience in applications of statistical methods for data analysis, including methods for the development of data-driven models
  • It is considered an advantage if you are able to communicate in Norwegian, or another Scandinavian language

For both the postdoctoral fellow positions:

We offer 

Salary and conditions

As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 553 500 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 2 years and with the desired start no later than 01.09.2022.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work. 

The position is subject to external funding.
