You will join our Experimental Fluid Mechanics Research Laboratory. You will be working under the supervision of Dr. Sean Symon on the project “Augmenting flow simulations with experimental data to improve aerodynamic efficiency”. The aim of this research is to data-assimilate experimental measurements of three-dimensional velocity fields around a model vehicle to improve simulation-based predictions of mean flow quantities. The improved mean flow field will be used to design a control strategy that reduces drag using synthetic jets on the vehicle. There will also be opportunities to supervise post-graduate students and to get involved in other projects in fluid mechanics in the fields of reduced-order modelling, flow control, wall-bounded turbulence, and diagnostics development.

The AFM research group is comprised of experts in theoretical, computational and experimental fluid mechanics and our aim is to provide an environment in which these different approaches can be combined and focused on particular topics of practical importance. You will join a vibrant and collaborative team of other postdoctoral researchers and graduate students working in different areas of fluid mechanics ranging from environmental flows to biomedical applications.

You will have or be close to completing a PhD in aerodynamics of fluid mechanics. Experience with experimental work is critical; knowledge of manufacturing and fabrication of models is desirable. Strong communication and language skills, as evidenced by publications and presentations, are essential.

Please contact Dr Sean Symon (sean.symon@soton.ac.uk) for further details about the position.
