At TU Dresden, Faculty of Chemistry and Food Chemistry, the Chair of Theoretical Chemistry offers a position as

Research Associate / PhD Student (m/f/x)
(subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13 TV-L)

The tentative starting date is August 1, 2022 with flexibility for an earlier or later start. The position is initially limited to 3 years with the option of extension and entails 65% of the fulltime weekly hours. The period of employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz - WissZeitVG). The position offers the chance to obtain further academic qualification (e.g. PhD).

The position is available in the junior research group of Dr. Dorothea Golze at TU Dresden. Dorothea’s research group launched in June 2021 as part of the Emmy-Noether program of the German Research Foundation. The goal of the group is to develop highly accurate theoretical methods for core-level spectroscopy of complex materials. The project will focus on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), which are powerful tools for materials characterization.

Tasks: In your position you will develop highly accurate GW-based methods for large-scale application to novel 2D framework materials. You will implement a low-scaling GW algorithm for massively parallel execution on the new generation of (pre-)exascale supercomputers, taking also GPU acceleration into account. The low-scaling GW code will be co-developed with the FHI-aims program package and the development will proceed in collaboration with the FHI-aims developer’s community as well the Novel Materials Discovery (NOMAD) team. In later stages of your project, you will apply your methodology for the prediction of XPS and XAS spectra of 2D materials in collaboration with experimental and computational partners at TU Dresden, in particular with the group of Prof. Thomas Heine.

Requirements: university degree in physics / chemistry / material science, preferentially with theoretical background. We are looking for a motivated candidate, who is interested in electronic-structure theory and code development. Basic programming skills are expected. Experience in parallelizing code on HPC platforms are a plus, but not mandatory. However, a strong motivation to learn programming for supercomputing platforms is required.

What we offer:

  • Training and courses in parallel programming at European supercomputing centers
  • Work in international and interdisciplinary environment
  • Broad qualification program and career support by the Graduate Academy of TU Dresden

Applications from women are particularly welcome. The same applies to people with disabilities.

Please submit your complete application (CV, cover letter explaining your motivation to apply for this position and contact information of one reference) by May 31, 2022 (stamped arrival date of the university central mail service applies) preferably via the TU Dresden SecureMail Portal https://securemail.tu-dresden.de  by sending it as a single pdf-document to dorothea.golze@tu-dresden.de with the subject “Application for open PhD position/GW” or by mail to: TU Dresden, Fakultät Chemie und Lebensmittelchemie, Professur für Theoretische Chemie, z. Hd. Frau Dr. Dorothea Golze, Helmholtzstr. 10, 01069 Dresden. Please submit copies only, as your application will not be returned to you. Expenses incurred in attending interviews cannot be reimbursed.
