The Department and role purpose:

The Student Support and Wellbeing Directorate is a section of the Colleges and Student Experience Division and brings together pan-institution specialist student support services and incorporates the Counselling Service, the Disability Support Service, and the Student Wellbeing Office.

The Student Wellbeing Office focusses on two key areas of activity: student health and wellbeing; and chaplaincy and faith support. The team delivers and supports proactive wellbeing activities for students. Initiatives are developed through consultation with students, support staff and external specialists. The wellbeing programme incorporates classes, events, training and campaigns to support students and staff who support students. The office co-ordinates the University Chaplaincy Network, develops diverse and inclusive provision for faith and belief, and advises on faith and belief matters. The team contributes to the development of University strategy and policy related to wellbeing and faith as well as providing representation, management and administration for University governance in these areas.

The post-holder will:

  • provide a student facing money advice service, managing and conducting drop-in sessions and appointments, and undertaking one-to-one casework; deliver effective and appropriate guidance to students requiring support with their finances including budgeting, debt management, frauds and scams, long-term financial challenges, benefits, employment, housing and banking; develop, deliver and evaluate a proactive programme of in-person money management, budgeting and financial capability activities relevant to all categories of students which includes presentations, workshops and trainings; develop innovative resources and communications offering pre-emptive advice on the money issues commonly faced by students including materials for webpages and social media; offer advice and training on student financial issues to student support staff; participate and engage with sector student money & finance networks and professional bodies such as the National Association of Student Money Advisers (NASMA) and maintain up to date knowledge and awareness of sector best practice and activities relating to student finances and advice; develop and maintain a network of relevant staff and students within the University and local stakeholders including banks and police liaison officers; keep up to date with relevant legislation and key developments in the area of student financial capability; understand and support the specific needs of diverse student groups (for example, those from a widening participation background, international students, mature students, disabled students etc.) and particularly those with heightened vulnerability; report on emerging financial trends and needs to inform and develop support for students across the University.
