Director of External Relations
Manchester Metropolitan is one of the largest universities in the UK, located at the heart of a vibrant and ambitious city. We trace our roots back to the early part of the nineteenth century, when institutions were established to deliver skills and education for local people, improving livelihoods and the economy. Today, we value our deep connection to Manchester, and our contribution to its development as a city-region renowned for ground-breaking innovation, radical thinking and social change.
The University is committed to providing excellent education to transform our students’ lives, and to delivering high quality research with powerful real-world impacts and benefits. While maintaining robust financial foundations, we will continue to invest to remain a great place to learn, research and work, continuously developing our people, campus, and infrastructure.
As the University continues to innovate in pursuit of excellence, we are now seeking an exceptional Director of External Relations. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and working closely with the Vice-Chancellor, the new postholder will be responsible for the development and implementation of the University’s external relations strategy. This includes oversight of a broad range of key functional areas – recruitment and admissions, marketing, communications, alumni and development, and international. We have recently completed the development of our ambitious Road to 2030 vision and strategy and this post will be absolutely key to success. You will therefore play a critical role in building the University’s profile and reputation to help deliver our vision and ambitious agenda over the next decade.
The successful candidate will bring a proven track record of strategic management and leadership gained either in higher education or from sectors with strong intellectual capital. You will have substantial experience of working in a dispersed and complex organisational structure where authority is derived through influence and persuasion and possess the requisite communication and interpersonal skills to build social capital quickly across our academic and professional services communities. Experience of developing successful, integrated strategies across one or more of the areas within this remit will be critical, as will a mind-set of innovation and entrepreneurship, underpinned by strong commercial acumen. A strategic thinker, with a high degree of integrity and excellent judgement, you will also have a genuine commitment to the mission and ethos of the University.
