The Institute for Communication Systems (ICS) home of the 5G/6G Innovation Centre (5G/6GIC) is looking to recruit a Resarch Fellow in Network Self Organisation in 5G and Beyond 5G. This exciting opportunity will be researching on advanced radio access network (RAN) technology in order to achieve network self-organisation, with a focus on developing machine learning algorithms to optimise various KPIs of a RAN.

The objective of the project the post holder will work on, is mainly in developing machine learning algorithms, particularly reinforcement learning, to optimise radio resource usage and/or power consumption for radio access network (RAN) in 5G and Beyond 5G. This project is a 1-year feasibility study on using a novel and ambitious approach unseen in the literature to achieve self-organising network (SON). The projects has one year to prove to the funder that our approach will work in order to unlock another year of funding for research beyond the feasibility study. The research is mainly carried out using computer simulations with some mathematical analysis.

ICS is the largest academic research institute in Europe specialising in all aspects of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies). It is home to over 200 researchers with expertise in all communication and broadcasting systems and has developed the best in class large scale testbeds for research and innovation and enjoys the state-of-the-art lab and computing facilities.

Established in 2012, 5GIC is the world’s first dedicated centre in researching end-to-end aspects of 5G and works closely with national and international leading academic institutes and key industrial partners. In November 2020, 6GIC was officially launched with parallel research undertaken in both 5G+ and 6G for 2030+.

RAN technology, radio resource allocation and optimisation, machine learning are key skills needed and PhD with good quality publications in the field are important qualifications to have. The candidates will need to be able to work in a team of researchers.

This is a fixed term contract up to 12 months.
