Salary: Level A – $95,179 – $102,163 plus 17% super

Founded in 1853, the University of Melbourne is Australia’s #1 university and is consistently ranked amongst the leading universities in the world. We are proud of our people, our commitment to research and teaching excellence, and our global engagement.

The Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT) is strongly committed to supporting diversity and flexibility in the workplace. Improving the representation of women is necessary in our goal to innovate and to strengthen FEIT’s reputation as a best-in-class centre of research.

School of Electrical, Mechanical and Infrastructure Engineering (EMI) recognises that engineered systems of present and future significance increasingly have connections to all three.

We are the oldest engineering school in Australia – initially founded in 1861 – and have evolved into a vibrant community of internationally recognised researchers passionate about addressing major challenges of today and into the future.

About the role:

The Soft Matter Informatics Research Group of the Department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to undertake research activities in the field of soft matter informatics, combining data science (Machine learning and statistical optimization algorithms) with multiscale simulations of soft matter (from atomistic to particle-based to continuum level) towards accelerated design of polymers and multicomponent colloidal assemblies and structure and rheology of confined complex fluids.

The computational work will involve development of an in-house software (Python scripting is preferable) and the use of the LAMMPS and HOOMD-blue software packages to perform multiscale simulations from molecular to particle-based mesoscopic simulations.

This is an exciting opportunity for an emerging academic to further develop their research profile in collaboration with leading practitioners locally, internationally and within the Australian Defence Science Group.

Responsibilities include:

  • Plan and carry out fundamental and application-oriented research, publishing outcomes in high-impact Q1 journals on a regular basis.
  • Identify sources of funding to support individual or collaborative projects, relating to teaching, research and engagement practice in the discipline.
  • Developing effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders to foster collaborative partnerships.

About You:

You are a passionate and self-motivated researcher with a commitment to quality, innovative interdisciplinary research as evidenced by publications in leading journals. You possess excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to a diverse audience.

You will further have:

  • A PhD in polymer physics, statistical mechanics, mathematical physics, mechanical/chemical engineering or an equivalent discipline.
  • Strong background in statistical polymer physics, structure and rheology of complex fluids such as polymer solutions and colloidal suspensions, and transport phenomena.
  • Excellent ability in analysing data, problem solving and maintaining accurate research records.

For specific responsibilities of this role please refer to the attached Position Description.

You will be supported to pursue achievement in all pillars of an academic career:

  • Research & Research Training
  • Contribution to Teaching and Learning
  • Engagement
  • Service and Leadership
