About the opportunity

The Classics and Ancient History Department invites applications for the 2022 Kevin Lee Teaching Fellowship. The Kevin Lee Teaching Fellowship is a two-year position designed to support the teaching of Latin and Ancient Greek at the University of Sydney. The recipient will design and create a suite of innovative and rigorous online assessments in beginner and intermediate units within the Classical languages. The Fellowship is funded by the Kudos Foundation.

The Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Sydney is internationally recognised for its excellence in research and teaching in all aspects of Greco-Roman antiquity. It collaborates closely with members of the sister Departments of Archaeology and Philosophy whose expertise lies in the ancient world.

The Kevin Lee Teaching Fellow will proactively develop a suite of online assessments and exercises for students in beginners' and intermediate Latin and Ancient Greek that promotes student engagement and acquisition of learning outcomes.

The Kevin Lee Teaching Fellow will also:

• design and create a meaningful and flexible suite of weekly online quizzes and homework exercises for the units and appraise, edit and incorporate current online assessments in these units, working with relevant unit coordinators as needed
• produce a set of non-assessed, engaging and meaningful online learning exercises to support students in developing the skills to do well in their assessments and attain unit learning outcomes to a high degree
• ensure that the design of assessments and exercises developed is informed by wide-ranging knowledge of research into language teaching and assessment practices
• tutor ab initio students in Latin and Ancient Greek, up to 2 hours per week, as needed and as other duties permit
• work collaboratively with colleagues in the Department of Classics and Ancient History to ensure a consistent, coherent and effective approach to assessing and teaching Classical languages
• promote and contribute to broader discussions in the Classical language teaching community in Australia and beyond about best-practice assessment models
• present the thinking behind and findings of the assessment-reform project at the Departmental research seminar
• participate in the Department's planned Teaching Classical Languages Seminar

About You

• masters' qualification or above however candidates with a BA(Hons) or Education degree will also be considered
• knowledge and understanding of both Latin and Ancient Greek
• experience in teaching ancient language(s)
• developing knowledge of online learning management systems
• developing knowledge of approaches to classical language teaching
• commitment to best-practice pedagogy, and to teaching and assessment design that promotes student engagement alongside development of skills.

Please note: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the position.
