Position Summary

Compensation Grade:
Academic Level C or Academic Level D

Salary Range:
Academic Level C: $121,795 - $140,102 pa (Full-Time)
Academic Level D: $146,208 - $160,854 pa (Full-Time)

The Practitioner Fellowship is a part-time fellowship for clinicians to engage in research related to their professional discipline. The scheme is targeted at high achieving clinical researchers to enable dedicated time for research and the development of their research careers, which will strengthen their competitiveness for external funding schemes such as the NHMRC Investigator Grants.

The Fellow will take a lead role in developing, managing and implementing research projects and in expanding the College’s research activities through the attraction of external grants and fellowships, delivering on strategic research objectives, and building the University’s national and international reputation through high quality publications and strong research collaborations.

Please note that the appointment will be made at either Senior Researcher (Level C - Practitioner Fellow), or Associate Professor (Level D - Practitioner Fellow). Please indicate in your suitability statement the level for which you wish to be considered.

Key Position Responsibilities

The Senior Researcher (Level C - Practitioner Fellow) is accountable for:

  • Making a significant contribution to ethical, high quality and innovative research through sustained high-quality publications, external research grants and contracts, mentoring and developing early career researchers and presenting their research outcomes at the national and international level.
  • Contributing to research leadership by fostering research excellence.
  • Developing a clear research plan and conducting and managing the research.
  • Taking a lead role in the identification, coordination and submission of applications for external research income.
  • Being actively involved in strategic planning and professional activities relevant to the promotion of research and in identifying opportunities to expand and grow research activity.
  • Developing and maintaining, in a leadership capacity, productive strategic local, national and international relationships, collaborations and networks with a range of stakeholders including industry, government and other external organisations.
  • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the position as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.

The Associate Professor (Level D - Practitioner Fellow) is accountable for:

  • Making an outstanding and distinguished contribution to research and engagement through original and innovative research, obtaining competitive external research funding and producing publications in high quality journals, at a sustained level, and delivering high quality presentations nationally and internationally.
  • Providing expertise and leadership in ethical, high quality and innovative research, mentorship to and development of early and mid-career researchers.
  • Leading and developing strategic planning and professional activities relevant to promoting research and identifying opportunities to expand and grow research income and publications.
  • Undertaking a significant leadership role in the College/University in fostering research excellence and making a significant contribution to leadership at the national and/or international level.
  • Taking a lead role in identifying and obtaining external research income.
  • Actively supervising and mentoring Higher Degree Research students.
  • Providing leadership and expertise to foster strategic local, national and international relationships, collaboration and networks with a range of stakeholders including industry, government and other external organisations.
  • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the position as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.

Key Position Capabilities

Senior Researcher (Level C - Practitioner Fellow):

  • Completion of a PhD or equivalent in a field of Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, Midwifery or Allied Health.
  • Currently registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Demonstrated evidence of an outstanding research track record (for career stage and relative to opportunity) in a relevant discipline, including evidence of sustained high-quality publications with corresponding authorship and attraction of competitive grants.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective research collaborations within the university and wider community including with industry, government and other organisations.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering project targets in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to use independent judgement and initiative, under minimal supervision, to manage, organise and coordinate activities required for the functioning of a research-intensive unit.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills, including the demonstrated ability to establish effective relationships with staff, students and industry nationally and/or internationally.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor less experienced College Staff

Associate Professor (Level D - Practitioner Fellow)

  • Completion of a PhD or equivalent in a field of Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, Midwifery or Allied Health.
  • Currently registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Demonstrated evidence of an outstanding research track record (for career stage and relative to opportunity) in a relevant discipline, including evidence of sustained high-quality publications with first or senior authorship and attraction of external competitive grants as lead investigator of a level that is consistent with being in the fundable category for NHMRC Investigator Grants.
  • Evidence of a substantial and sustained research impact and proven ability to undertake an active leadership role in research activities e.g. in developing collaborative research and leading applications for external funding.
  • Significant experience in a senior academic or research leadership position with relevant Research Project management experience relevant to the research environment, including leadership of a team.
  • A demonstrated strong track record of establishing effective research collaborations with external national and international partners.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including the demonstrated ability to establish effective relationships with staff, students and industry nationally and/or internationally.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor less experienced College Staff.
