About This Opportunity

The Institute for Teaching and Learning Innovation (ITaLI) is taking a leading role in teaching and learning, professional education and innovation in higher education. ITaLI is an integrated teaching, research and service delivery centre for teaching and learning practices at UQ. ITaLI seeks to establish and maintain a flexible operating structure to drive and support innovation and excellence for these activities.

Under the Leadership of the Director, ITaLI provides leadership, engagement and advocacy in educational innovation, teaching excellence and learning analytics, and aims to transform teaching and learning across the University through the delivery of faculty and executive prioritised, teaching and learning projects and services. ITaLI addresses critical areas of unmet need in teaching and learning by bridging the gap between the exponentially expanding discipline of higher education teaching and the increasing complexity of teaching to assist University teaching staff and improve the learning experience of students.

Primary Purpose of Position

Level B

This teaching-focused position contributes to:

  • undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching and supervision;
  • teaching into the professional learning programs offered at the university;
  • engaging with and supporting others to engage with the scholarship of teaching and learning;
  • conducting service-based activities to further the Institute’s contribution to the University and beyond;
  • other activities associated with the work of the Institute.

Applicants with expertise, related to higher education, in the areas of digital and online learning; innovation in teaching and learning; experiential learning and/or online assessment will be highly regarded.

Key responsibilities include:

Teaching and Learning

  • Teaching into the professional learning program offered by ITaLI to UQ staff.
  • Taking responsibility for the preparation and delivery of professional learning modules in this program.
  • Contributing to curriculum design and the development of new course material, by consulting with program advisors and stakeholders to ensure courses are engaging, relevant and contemporary.
  • Supporting teaching staff across UQ to enhance student learning experiences.
  • Teaching into an undergraduate and/or postgraduate course in a field consistent with the individual’s base discipline.
  • Coordinating courses, preparing and delivering lectures, tutorials and practical classes, and undertaking assessment and marking for undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
  • Contributing to the supervision of postgraduate and higher degree by research students.
  • Understanding and applying University rules as relevant to teaching and learning practice.

Research / Scholarship

  • Developing an independent and/or team research program in higher education through collaboration and individual efforts.
  • Reviewing and drawing upon best practice educational research methodologies.
  • Working with colleagues and students in the development and conduct of joint research projects in the field of applied higher education.

Service and Engagement

  • Assisting in fostering Institute relations with UQ Schools, Faculties and other stakeholders and actively developing external links by fostering relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider UQ community.
  • Developing external contributions to the profession and community through, for example, active membership of professional bodies.
  • Supporting the DVCA portfolio in the development of policy documents and discussion papers.
  • Participating in the Institute’s consultative fora.
  • Performing a range of administrative functions in the Institute as associated with the role.

Level C

The teaching focused academic contributes to:

  • undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching and supervision;
  • teaching into the professional learning programs offered at the university;
  • scholarship of teaching and learning;
  • service activities to further the Institute's contribution to the University and beyond;
  • other administrative activities associated with the work of the Institute.

Applicants with expertise, related to higher education, in the areas of digital and online learning; innovation in teaching and learning; experiential learning and/or online assessment will be highly regarded.

  • Maintaining and improving the quality of courses as measured through evaluation instruments to meet industry and educational standards.
  • Providing support to other academic positions as needed and during absences.
  • Understanding and applying University rules as relevant to teaching and learning practice.

Research / Scholarship

  • Teaching into the professional learning program offered by ITaLI to UQ staff.

Service and Engagement

  • Coordinating longer term initiatives required for a comprehensive service offering and improved impact aligned with UQ’s broader strategies.
  • Assisting in fostering Institute relations with UQ Schools, Faculties and other stakeholders and actively developing external links by fostering relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider business community.
  • Developing external contributions to the profession and community through, for example, active membership of professional bodies.
  • Supporting the DVCA portfolio in the development of policy papers.
  • Participating in the Institute’s consultative fora.
  • Promoting the Institute’s research capabilities and building networks.
  • Supporting training and mentorship in higher education for UQ staff and higher degree research students.
  • Performing a range of administrative functions in the Institute as associated with the role.

Organisational Relationships

The position reports to the Director, Institute for Teaching and Learning Innovation.

Selection Criteria

Level B

  • Completion of a PhD in higher education context or similar.
  • HEA Fellowship or willingness to undertake the HEA program.
  • Experience in development and delivery of professional learning programs for higher education teaching staff.
  • Experience in curriculum development informed by knowledge of current teaching practices and a demonstrated ability to relate to and teach students at the undergraduate, postgraduate and/or professional level and conduct tutorials.
  • Evidence of scholarship of teaching, including education research, or teaching innovations.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, teamwork, negotiation and consultation skills and formal written and oral communication skills, with an ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, particularly the relevant academic leaders.
  • High personal work ethic to complete tasks in a timely manner, along with the personal qualities of openness, respectfulness and integrity, and a commitment to upholding the University’s values.

Level C

  • Completion of a PhD in higher education context or similar.
  • HEA Fellowship or willingness to undertake the HEA program.
  • Experience in development and delivery of professional learning programs for higher education teaching staff.
  • Experience in curriculum development informed by knowledge of current teaching practices and a demonstrated ability to relate to and teach students at the undergraduate, postgraduate and/or professional level and conduct tutorials.
  • A growing profile in the scholarship of teaching and learning with a track record of peer reviewed publications in leading journals.
  • Involvement in development and success of proposals for external research funding.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, teamwork, negotiation and consultation skills and formal written and oral communication skills, with an ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, particularly the relevant academic leaders.
  • High personal work ethic to complete tasks in a timely manner, along with the personal qualities of openness, respectfulness and integrity, and a commitment to upholding the University’s values.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed-term position through to July 2025 at Academic Level B/C.

Academic Level B

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range AUD$101,533 - $120,570 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range AUD$118,794 - $141,067 per annum.

Academic Level C

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range AUD$124,378 - $143,415 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range AUD$145,522 - $167,796 per annum.
