Position Description: PD_Senior Technical Officer ANU06 NGS and Genotyping.pdf

Position overview

ANU has an international reputation for research and education relevant to the health and well-being of the population of Australia, as well as that of the developing world. This is achieved through discovery research, applied research in health service settings, research-led teaching in health and medical sciences, and the translation of research findings into practice and policy. The ANU College of Health and Medicine comprises the Research School of Psychology, the ANU Medical School, the John Curtin School of Medical Research and the Research School of Population Health. These schools work together to deliver world-class research and education across the spectrum of medicine and health-related fields, working in partnership with the health sector at local, national and international levels.

The Biomolecular Resource Facility (BRF), located within the John Curtin School of Medical Research, is a service node of Bioplatforms Australia and provides consultancy and services using high-end technologies and equipment. These services include Next Generation High Throughput Sequencing (NGS), Sanger Sequencing, Genotyping and the ANU Centre for Therapeutic Discovery. We have a diverse client base including researchers from ANU, CSIRO and University of Canberra, with applications ranging from health to agriculture and environment. We seek to appoint two Senior Technical Officers, one in the NGS team and one in the Genotyping team.

The NGS position will work in the Sequencing team. The appointee will work with the Team leader, sequencing and will be responsible service provision on broad ranging NGS services including library preparation (e.g., DNA, RNA, single cell and HiC), QC analysis of samples and data as well as running sequencing instrumentation. This position requires experience in molecular biology, and a high level of organisational skills, attention to detail as well as strong interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise with students and academics on a range of bioscience research topics.

The Genotyping position is responsible for assisting the Team Leader (Genotyping) with the complex tasks of the facility to provide an accurate high quality genotyping service for all genetically modified mice at ANU and external clients. This position requires strong expertise in mouse genetics as well as project management and customer service skills. The appointee will be responsible for screening mice, assist with designing, optimising and troubleshooting conventional assays including those for CRISPR and conditional mouse models such as Cre/lox. In addition, the appointee will be working with a small team implementing liquid handling automation workflows used for screening mice.

As a client-focused facility, effective communication skills and teamwork are essential, along with an interest in bioscience research. Additionally, these roles require a solid and demonstrated background in laboratory-based molecular biology skills and/or a strong understanding of genetics. If you have a background or experience in these skills, we would welcome an application from you.
