The Department of Communication of the Faculty of Social Sciencesinvites applications for the position of Associate/Assistant Professor in communication. We are looking for applicants to teach courses in journalism. A track record of high quality research and publication is a must. Qualifications and willingness to teach the following courses are expected: English News Writing; English News Editing;Advanced News Writing and Reporting in English; and Workshop: English Publication. Additional courses may be assigned to match the teaching needs of the department, faculty, and university.Ability to develop and teachnew courses in data journalism will be highly desirable.

The Department of Communication currently offers broad-based curricula leading to Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees covering various areas of communication studies (communication theory, intercultural communication, organizational communication, communication skills); vocationally-oriented public communication (public relations, advertising, and event planning); media studies and journalism (journalism writing and publication, mass media, new media, digital culture); cultural studies (cultural and critical theory, cinema, and popular culture); public speaking; and creative media (video production, photography, and animation). The Department of Communication also has an active and successful PhD programme.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a PhD in a relevant field. Highly qualified ABDs will be considered, but must have the doctorate in hand before reporting to duty. Candidates must have a demonstrablerecord of conducting research and publishingin internationally respected channels, ideally SSCI journals. Professional experience in news media and/or teaching experience at the university level is highly desirable. While candidates must be fluent in English, ability to speak Chinese would be a plus (but not required). In addition, expertise in researching and teaching data journalism and multimedia reporting will be highly preferred.

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in January or August 2023.

Remuneration

A taxable annual remuneration starting MOP828,100 (approximately USD102,230) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions. Apart from competitive remuneration, UM offers a wide range of benefits, such as medical insurance, provident fund, on-campus accommodation/housing allowance and other subsidies.
