Applications are invited for a Permanent post of a Full Professor of Sustainability Geoscience within UCD School of Earth Sciences
 
The UCD School of Earth Sciences invites applications for a Full Professor position under the Senior Academic Leadership Initiative (SALI) Call 2020, in line with the requirements set out in the Higher Education Authority (HEA) Call document
 
The Senior Academic Leadership Initiative gives priority to highly qualified female candidates within the boundaries of what is legally permissible, in order to address their underrepresentation; preferential consideration of female candidates is excluded if other reasons worthy of legal protection, prevail. In exceptional circumstances, candidates who are in a minority or protected under Irish social legislation, or who also belong to an underrepresented minority in academic posts may be approved if the institution can clearly articulate reasons worthy of legal protection as to why they should be considered.

Our degree programmes reflect the evolving needs of society and industry, producing graduates with modern field, laboratory, analytical, digital and geospatial skills that are nationally and internationally highly regarded. We provide BSc (Hons), MSc and PhD degrees in Geology, in addition to taught modules across programmes in Earth Science, Environmental Science, Environmental Sustainability, Energy Systems and Risk, Resilience & Sustainability. A new MSc in Subsurface Characterisation and Geomodelling will be introduced later this year and we are keen to develop additional taught-graduate offerings.

Creating a sustainable global society is a core objective of UCD’s 2020-2024 Rising to the Future strategy. Under the SALI scheme, we seek to strengthen further the sustainability element of our research and teaching by making a strategic appointment at Full Professor level. Geoscience is key to achieving many of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and we encourage applications from those who can make a major contribution to this effort. The successful candidate will be an exceptional mid-career geoscientist capable of driving forward the sustainability agenda from a geoscience perspective, and able to offer vision and leadership at school, university, and national level. It is anticipated that they may also wish to have a leadership role in iCRAG. Although open to applications across the full breadth of sustainability geoscience, we have prioritised three areas bearing on some of the most important global challenges facing humanity.

These are:
(1)     Hydrogeology – all aspects of the availability, quality and protection of groundwater;
(2)     The supply of critical raw materials to drive the energy transition and support the move to an increasingly circular economy, and
(3)     Geological and geotechnical characterisation of the subsurface, particularly as it applies to infrastructure development, including onshore and offshore renewable energy, and energy storage projects.
 
95 Full Professor C (2010) Salary Scale: €124,586 - €157,628 per annum
Appointment will be made on scale in accordance with the Department of Finance guidelines.
