About the Role

Bring your outstanding team leadership experience to drive innovation and continuous improvement in the delivery of progressive, client centric library services at The University of South Australia.

Reporting directly to the Deputy Director: Resources and Technical Services, the Manager: Library Services is responsible for mentoring and motivating an academic Library team to successfully support the research, teaching and learning aims of academic units as well as responding to campus specific priorities.

The position represents the Library through effective liaison at a range of committees throughout the University and leads essential projects for researcher, academic and student success. The position is a core member of the Library Management Group contributing to and operationalising the Library’s strategic goals.

The University of South Australia Library

The University of South Australia Library supports the University’s teaching, learning and research mission through the provision of relevant information resources and associated services. The Library also coordinates copyright for the University. There are four campus libraries located at City East, City West, Magill and Mawson Lakes and an off-campus Library Service that supports regional engagement at Whyalla and Mt Gambier. Information technology and information resource management services are managed from the Mawson Lakes campus.

The Library operates in an environment of increasing availability of digital information in support of the University’s Digital Learning Strategy. As such, it has accelerated its commitment to acquire the vast majority of resources in digital format which are accessible and discoverable via an established next generation Library Management System. The Library has a growing research collection with over 700,000 eBooks and online journals available anytime, anywhere, on any device. The Library maintains a targeted, high quality print collection and is the custodian of several valuable special collections including the Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Library.

The Library is operating in an environment of increasing availability of digital information and demand and it plays a significant role in training staff and students in information skills.

Core Responsibilities

  • Manage, lead and motivate the Library Services staff to meet strategic targets through recruitment, training, documentation, process improvement and performance planning and management
  • Contribute as part of the management team to the strategic planning of the Library
  • Formulate and lead the Library’s response to drivers and initiatives in higher education
  • Monitor and evaluate collections and their usage to ensure teaching and learning needs are met
  • Ensure that the Library Services staff are aware of strategic directions of the University, academic units, and Research Centres

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Management experience with proven ability to lead and develop teams in a complex environment, including the development, implementation and continuous improvement of work practices and procedures
  • Well-developed strategic and problem-solving skills, including the ability to be innovative and creative in providing advice and solutions to services needs
  • High level analytical, research and writing skills to enable the effective synthesis of relevant information and data, and the provision of high-quality written reports and correspondence
