School of Modern Languages

Professor of Arabic – AC7974SB

Salary: by negotiation

The School of Modern Languages is seeking to appoint a Professor of Arabic within the Department of Arabic and Persian. In your position as  Professor of Arabic you will provide leadership to an established department and will oversee the delivery of both a full four-year undergraduate degree and a postgraduate programme. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant area of Arabic literary/cultural studies and should possess native or near-native language skills in spoken and written Arabic. In addition, applicants should possess an internationally recognised record of research excellence, have a successful track record in attracting both external funding and postgraduate students, and demonstrate expertise in curriculum development and teaching. We welcome applications not only from current chair holders, but also from candidates who are advanced senior lecturers/associate professors.

Applications are invited from candidates with a specialist research interest in any area of Arabic literary/cultural studies (including, but not limited to, literary studies, film and media studies, and cultural/intellectual history). We are particularly interested in recruiting someone with expertise in the modern/contemporary period, but are also open to candidates whose work is not bound to a particular time-period. The ability to establish links across other disciplines within the University will also be an advantage. We are looking to recruit an individual with the strategic leadership and intellectual drive to maintain and enhance an innovative curriculum that will appeal to future generations of students. An ability to oversee and manage the delivery of a successful language programme in Modern Standard Arabic will be essential.

Informal enquiries about this post may be directed to Dr Fabio Caiani (Head of Department) – email arabhod@st-andrews.ac.uk or Professor Seán Allan (Head of School) – email langshos@st-andrews.ac.uk.

We expect to host interviews in person in St Andrews subject to travel requirements in force at that time.

Applications are particularly welcome from women, people from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community, and other protected characteristics who are under-represented in academic posts at the University.

Equality, diversity and inclusion are at the heart of the St Andrews experience.  We strive to create a fair and inclusive culture demonstrated through our commitment to diversity awards (Athena Swan, Carer Positive, LGBT Charter, Race Charters and Stonewall).
