The Department of Classics and Ancient History is part of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (ranked 19th in the world in the THE 2021 world rankings). The Department of Classics and Ancient History is one of the very best in the UK, and indeed worldwide, with an outstanding reputation for excellence in teaching and research.

We were ranked joint second in the last national research evaluation (REF2014) in terms of the quality of our work (by grade point average), and joint first in terms of the quality of our research environment. We attract large numbers of exceptionally talented undergraduate, MA and doctoral students, and we focus on high quality research-led teaching. The department delivers very high levels of overall student satisfaction. In student-facing guides and league tables we are regularly ranked among the top three Classics departments in the UK.

We have a long tradition of excellence in Greek and Latin literature, ancient history and ancient philosophy. Three interdisciplinary research centres are based in the department: the Centre for the Study of the Ancient Mediterranean and the Near East (CAMNE), the Durham Centre for Classical Reception (DCCR), and the Durham Centre for Ancient and Medieval Philosophy (DCAMP). In addition to these established areas of strength, we are interested in developing collaborations with other cross-departmental research initiatives: for example, visual arts and culture, medical humanities, and digital humanities.

Applications are invited for a Teaching Fellow in Ancient History. The successful applicant will contribute to the research-led teaching of Ancient History at all levels, and will be expected to teach on both Roman and Greek topics. Existing modules that might be taught by the successful candidate in the academic year 2023-24 include: Craft of the Ancient Historian; Crisis of the Roman Republic; Emperors and Dynasties; Monuments and Memory in the Age of Augustus. There will also be the opportunity for the postholder to design and teach a new module of their choice at MA level. The post involves some teaching in the summer/ Easter period when it is expected that the candidate will take part in outreach activities, including summer schools.

Teaching Fellowships offer the opportunity of valuable experience to those early in their academic careers and the University is keen to maximise the benefit to as many people as possible. The post of Teaching Fellow will involve a significant teaching load, which may extend into the summer period, and there may be related scholarship and the opportunity for administrative duties which relate to education and pedagogy.

The post is for a fixed term only, and it is not anticipated that the post will be extended beyond this fixed term.
