Applications are invited for appointment as Professor and Head of Department of Geography (Ref: 512084), to commence as soon as possible, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract.  Exceptionally outstanding candidate may be considered for appointment on tenure terms. subject to approval.  The appointment as Head of Department will be made for an initial three-year term, renewable subject to mutual agreement.

The Department of Geography

The Department of Geography, established in 1931, is the first university-level geography department in Hong Kong.  The 2021 QS World University Ranking rated the Department the 11th among the world’s top 200 universities in the subject of geography and area studies.  The Department offers comprehensive undergraduate, taught postgraduate, MPhil and PhD programmes in human and physical geography broadly defined.  Its team of 16 full-time professoriate staff, more than 30 research post-graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, is actively engaged in cutting-edge research ranging from climate change and global sustainability to urban and transport, tourism and recreation, GIS and remote sensing, and China and the Asia-Pacific.  The Department’s scholarly activities are well supported by four modern specialized laboratories and a map library. The Department is looking for a visionary scholar of the highest academic credentials who has a commitment to help build a community of active researchers.  The area of research expertise is open but the appointee should have the administrative experience and capability required to lead the Department.  The Head will provide a supportive research environment, commit to excellence in education and knowledge exchange.  The appointee will lead strategic planning within the Department to deliver positive outcomes across our research and teaching programmes.  He/She will bring energy, experience in leadership and administration, and strong interpersonal skills to the role.  The appointee will be responsible for building a close and extensive network with the community, and contribute a significant voice in the leadership structure of the Faculty.  He/She will ensure, through effective leadership and coordination, that the activities of the Department are in alignment with the Faculty’s strategic research areas. 

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
