Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for a Research Fellow position in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Appointments will be on a 2-year contract in the first instance, with the possibility of extension. Fresh PhD holders are welcome.

Purpose of the post

The Research Fellow will be responsible to, and work closely with the Principal Investigator and a team of researchers on the goals set out for the project(s) of interest. The project involves microbiology and flow cytometry work with anaerobes and bacteriophages.

Main duties and responsibilities

Specifically, the Research Fellow’s role will be to develop a rapid bacteriophage isolation methodology. We have developed a bacteriophage platform and assembled a collection of bacteriophages. We also develop the basic principles for rapid isolation of bacteriophages using flow cytometry and cell-sorting, in combination with multiplexed cultures of target bacteria. One of the aims is to develop the method, validate it and deploy it on microbiome biobanks to mine and reveal the global phageome.

The Research fellow will join and lead an international collaboration involving NUS and the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology Researchers (SMART) program, and is expected to show leadership, project and people management’s skills.

Qualifications

The applicant should:

  • Hold a PhD in Microbiology, Biological Sciences, or related disciplines.
  • Be able to work independently and in a team, and have an investigative nature & attention to details.
  • Be strongly motivated in method development and validation, with a rigorous sense of data collection and analysis.
  • Have knowledge and hand-on experience on Flow cytometry applied to bacteria and/or bacteriophages (must have).
  • Have knowledge and hand-on experience in microbiome culturomic methods (including anaerobes).
  • Bio-informatic analysis (sequencing) hands-on experience would be a plus.

Remuneration will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Formal application: Please submit your application, indicating current/expected salary, supported by a detailed CV (including personal particulars, academic and employment history, complete list of publications/oral presentations and full contacts of 3 referees). We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
