Āu Mahi | What You Will Do

Te Whare Wānanaga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury is seeking to fill a permanent, full-time academic post in the discipline of Psychology in Te Kura Mahi ā-Hirikapo | the School of Psychology, Speech and Hearing. The successful candidate will be a high quality emerging or accomplished researcher in the psychology of social media and emerging online technologies. In this vital role, you will conduct research on social media and other emerging online technologies; seek external funding to support staff and student research; teach one undergraduate and one postgraduate course on the psychology of social media and other emerging technologies; supervise research related to social media or other online technologies; and assist with academic initiatives within the School and the University.

Applicants should have a PhD or an appropriate equivalent qualification in Psychology or related field. The successful candidate will have an ability and willingness to deliver high quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and a commitment to do world-class research in the area of social media and emerging online technologies. We are looking for a colleague who is able and willing to work collaboratively, elevate the reputation of the school, advance its curriculum, and explore opportunities for research collaboration.

The essential selection criteria are:

  • A PhD in Psychology or a closely cognate discipline as long as one's research expertise is on social media and other emerging online technologies.
  • Research and scholarship in a field relevant to the psychology of social media and emerging online technologies consistent with appointment at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer.
  • Experience teaching and coordinating undergraduate and/or post-graduate students.
  • Demonstrate an openness to conduct interdisciplinary research through collaboration with experts in computer science, communications, engineering, and other disciplines.
  • Demonstrate an ability and willingness to encourage, facilitate, and supervise the research of Honours, Masters, and PhD students on topics related to social media and emerging online technologies.
  • Demonstrate potential and willingness to generate external research income.
  • Demonstrate ability, or clear potential, to develop and lead innovative research programmes.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and/or willingness to learn about bicultural and multicultural issues in Aotearoa New Zealand Society, including a commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi The Treaty of Waitangi, and display a willingness to engage professionally with diversity.
  • knowledge and growing competence in te reo Māori or other Pacific languages and customs is desirable.
  • Demonstrate acceptable administration, and/or University and/or professional service contribution.
