PhD Fellowship in K. G. Jebsen Center for Genetic Epidemiology

About the position

We currently have a vacancy at the K. G. Jebsen Center for Genetic Epidemiology for a PhD Fellowship. This is a 3-year temporary position within the field of genetic epidemiology and statistical genetics. We seek a talented and enthusiastic person with experience in genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics, statistics, medicine, epidemiology or biostatistics. For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.  

Duties of the position

Our research is using information from large population-based cohorts available to the K.G. Jebsen Center for Genetic Epidemiology. This includes genotype data on more than 88,000 individuals from the HUNT Study (https://www.ntnu.edu/hunt) linked with comprehensive health information from both local and national registries such as medical records at hospitals and primary care, the birth registry, the cause of death registry and the prescription registry.

The topic of the PhD project will involve studying how genetic variation at the population level influences risk of disease, in order to better understand reasons for illness and health. The specific aims for the project will be developed in collaboration with the candidate. The work will involve application and development of robust and reproducible methods for analyses of large-scale genomic data such as genome-wide analyses, polygenetic risk scores, Mendelian randomization, functional bioinformatical follow up and network analysis.

The period of employment for the position as a PhD candidate is 3 years full-time. Admission to a doctoral degree program is a requirement. For regulations concerning the PhD-degree at NTNU,

Required selection criteria

  • You must have a professionally relevant background as a master’s degree or an equivalent education in a relevant field such as genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics, statistics, public health, health sciences, epidemiology, biostatistics, molecular biology, or a medical degree. 
  • Experience in quantitative statistical analysis.
  • Experience in academic writing.
  • Technical knowledge including experience with statistical software (R, STATA or equivalent), programming languages (Python, Perl, C++ or equivalent) or distributed computation.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education. 
  • Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree programme, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level 

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant  

Preferred selection criteria

  • Previous research experience and/or publication.
  • Experience working in linux-based environments will be considered an advantage.
  • Excellent communication skills, both orally and written.

We seek a  candidate with personal motivation and proven ability to work both independently and in a team, as well as potential as a researcher.

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 491 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in medicine and health sciences (https://www.ntnu.edu/studies/phmedhv/admission) within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.

About the application

Joint works will be considered. If it is difficult to identify your contribution to joint works, you must attach a brief description of your participation.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates.
