Job Description

IPS is looking to hire a Research Assistant (Special Projects) to support the S R Nathan Fellow for the Study of Singapore, and the IPS Public Affairs department. The candidate’s main tasks include providing research and administrative support to the Fellowship as well as to public communications. The candidate should be intellectually curious, proficient in writing concise and compelling copy, and able to manage editorial projects and meet deadlines. The candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree, ideally in English Language or Social Sciences. Journalistic experience will be an advantage.

The Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) is an autonomous research centre focused on Singapore public policy, under the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore. 

The Research Assistant (Special Projects) will provide research and administrative support for IPS’ S R Nathan Fellow for the Study of Singapore, and the IPS Communications department. 

The Research Assistant will have the opportunity to assist and learn from IPS’ slate of distinguished S R Nathan Fellows for the Study of Singapore. He/she will also be closely involved in supporting the public communications work of IPS, via traditional and new media.

The Research Assistant will benefit from opportunities to participate in IPS research projects where time permits, and exposure to policy discussions at events organised by IPS and the institutions and departments under the National University of Singapore, 

The job scope includes:

  • Researching developments in a range of public policy areas;
  • Generating ideas for, and crafting clear and concise speeches on various public policy topics;
  • Attending IPS events and writing reports for the e-newsletter;
  • Managing the IPS e-newsletter and book projects (administrative, writing and editing duties); and
  • Monitoring and reporting on relevant media reports.

Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Have a passion for grammar; details; accuracy; fact-checking; and writing clear, logical and concise content;
  • Be intellectually curious and possess strong research skills;
  • Be resourceful and street-smart in getting things done;
  • Able to manage his/her time well and meet tight deadlines;
  • Have an interest in Singapore public policy issues and politics;
  • Have a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in English Language or Social Sciences; and 
  • Ideally, have some experience in journalism (a plus, not a requirement)
