Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Urban Environments and Climate Change in the Department of Geography (Ref.: 511669), to commence on September 1, 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of the second three-year fixed-term contract.  Exceptionally outstanding candidates at the Professor/Associate Professor level may be considered for appointment with direct tenure subject to approval.

The Department of Geography, established in 1931, is the first university-level geography department in Hong Kong.  The 2021 QS World University Ranking rated the Department the 11th among the world’s top 200 universities in the subject of geography and area studies.  The Department offers comprehensive undergraduate, taught postgraduate, MPhil and PhD programmes in human and physical geography with an interdisciplinary orientation.  Its team of 16 full-time teaching staff, more than 30 post-doctoral fellows and research students, is actively engaged in cutting-edge research.  The Department’s scholarly activities are well supported by a map library and four modern specialized laboratories.  More information of the Department can be obtained at https://www.geog.hku.hk/.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in Geography or cognate disciplines with strength/expertise on sustainable urban development, climate mitigation and adaptation, carbon neutrality, low-carbon urbanism, ecological cities, and/or future cities.  They should have extensive research and teaching experience at the tertiary level, with a strong track record in reputable research grants and publications.  The appointee will teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervise research postgraduate students, contribute actively to research and knowledge exchange, and assume service/administrative responsibilities as appropriate.  Candidates appointed at a senior level will also lead collaborative and interdisciplinary initiatives in research and knowledge exchange, mentor and nurture the next generation of scholars and researchers, and assume high-level service/administrative responsibilities relevant to the Department’s operation and strategic development.  The appointee is also expected to collaborate with researchers in the Cities 2050 research cluster of the Faculty of Social Sciences which comprises experts in urban and mobility studies, and aims at resolving urban challenges and improving the quality of life of citizens.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.  The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary.  Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
