This is an excellent opportunity for a postgraduate candidate with strong research, educational, and organisational skills to further develop their expertise in an innovative new role. 

This hybrid role will involve two main areas of responsibility: (1) supporting research into mental health and well-being of University of Southampton students, and (2) working within the existing senior tutor team providing pastoral support to all taught students within the Faculty alongside other senior tutors.

The research aspect of the position would focus on mental health in students, in research led by Professor Sam Chamberlain. His research group focuses on impulsive and compulsive symptoms (e.g. gambling disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, substance use, and self-injury) as well as other symptoms such as anxiety and depression. The work will be supervised by Professor Chamberlain within the Psychiatry group of the Faculty of Medicine. The Role would involve assisting Professor Chamberlain to develop and conduct research focusing on mental health and well-being in young people (such as surveys and the use of previously validated digital monitoring tools), focusing on students at the University of Southampton. It would also involve: interfacing with other teams and staff at the University of Southampton and other institutions to help promote and ensure research is conducted; contributing to the design and conduct of research including ethics applications, recruitment, and interpretation of data; and ensuring research is conducted in accordance with good practice and regulatory standards. The successful candidate, depending on interests, will also have other opportunities to assist in research being led by others within the Department of Psychiatry. 

The educational aspect of the post will complement the research. The successful candidate will join a very experienced Senior Tutor team within the Faculty of Medicine to provide pastoral support to undergraduate and post graduate students. Support and training will be given to enable the candidate to gain an understanding of the demands on students as well as the regulations and processes that govern University education. They will be expected to work with academics and University support services to contribute to creating a safe and caring educational environment that allows students to flourish

The job

This is a full time fixed appointment for a period of 4 years, available from early 2022. For the first year the time commitment will be divided 70% research and 30% education, moving to 50% research and 50% education for years 2-4. 

The successful candidate will have a PhD or professional qualification(s) relevant to health or social care, psychology, psychiatry, education, or a related discipline. 

The candidate will demonstrate a proactive approach, the ability to use own initiative, and well developed attention to detail.  The candidate will have an opportunity to gain additional knowledge and experience in clinically relevant research and education if desired.
