Assistant Professor in Food Science and Nutrition
The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences is passionate about the principles and applications of Science and Technology in all its forms and strives to be excellent in research, teaching and innovation.
Working within the Department of Applied Sciences, in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, you will provide expertise in the area of Food Science and Nutrition, to further enhance research, teaching and entrepreneurial activities. This will include designing, developing and delivering high quality teaching provision, undertaking research (including collaborative research activity with industry partners and other multidisciplinary activities) to produce high-quality academic outputs and participating in external activity to generate income and promote the subject area.
Food Science and Nutrition is an integral part of the Department’s research and teaching portfolio, and our research-informed teaching underpins all undergraduate and post-graduate programmes. The ideal candidate is expected to work effectively within both teaching and research teams, and would ideally be able to bring new opportunities for research collaboration to the Department.
The department has state-of-the-art facilities for research, including recently refurbished well-equipped laboratories for food technology, organoleptic testing, sample preparation and analysis, alongside biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, microscopy and tissue culture suites, further complemented by high performance computing and dedicated facilities for metabolomics, proteomics and genomics (including MySeq and PacBio sequencing platforms - https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/business-services/engage-with-us/research/nu-omics/) and human participant studies (https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/business-services/engage-with-us/research/nutran/). The successful candidate must hold a first degree, be qualified to Doctoral level in a relevant discipline and have subject expertise in the area of Food Science and Nutrition with specialist knowledge gained through research activity, professional practice or consultancy. We are particularly interested in applications from candidates with expertise in multidisciplinary activities across the spectrum of food and nutrition-related research, and who are ideally certified by the Association for Nutrition as an RNutr or The Institute of Food Science and Technology as a Member. A proven ability to deliver high quality research-led teaching and have evidence of research outputs which are of a quality consistent with criteria for inclusion in future Research Excellence Framework submissions are essential.
