A permanent opportunity has arisen for a Senior Adviser Human Research Ethics and Integrity join Deakin’s Research Portfolio to provide University-wide advice and services to ensure the Deakin University community is aware of their obligations to meet human research ethics and compliance obligations. Based at our Burwood campus, the position is also responsible for providing advice and support to the Manager, Research Integrity and the Pro Vice-Chancellor Researcher Development across a range of human research ethics fields.

 Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Provide strategic support and advice to the Manager, Research Integrity and the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Researcher Development) regarding the management of human research ethics review across Deakin.
  • Provide high level advice regarding complex ethical issues and develop, guidelines and training resources for researchers, staff within the Human Research Ethics team, DUHREC members and the Faculty Human Ethics Advisory Group (HEAG) Chairs, reviewers and Secretariats.
  • Provide high level support and advice to the Deakin University Human Research Ethics Committee (DUHREC) to facilitate University compliance with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007 revised 2018), the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research (2018) as it relates to human research and relevant legislation.
  • Develop policies and procedures for human research and research integrity in consultation with the Manager, Research Integrity and Research Integrity and Governance Officer.
  • Oversee the management of serious adverse events, complaints and allegations of breaches of the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research (2018) (the research code) and act as the assessment officer for allegations of serious breaches of the research code where they relate to human research projects.
  • Provide strategic support for the development, integration and ongoing enhancement of streamlined systems within Deakin Research Integrity to allow the Faculties, Institutes and Research Centres to meet the University’s strategic research plan.

 To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Degree or equivalent experience, in a relevant field
  • Significant experience in the development and delivery of workshops and research training
  • Experience of university systems, committee management, and decision making processes
  • Experience in human research ethics and research governance systems and processes
  • Experience of dealing with external regulatory bodies (e.g. NHMRC, TGA))
  • In depth knowledge of the legislation and standards relating to human ethics compliance
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective and collaborative teams
  • Excellent written and interpersonal skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, researchers and with other members of the University and the wider community

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, initiative, diplomacy, tact and discretion as well as proven experience handling sensitive and personal information in a confidential and appropriate manner
