Working within the Department of Mechanical and Construction Engineering, you will provide expertise in an area of Mechanical Engineering to further enhance research, teaching and entrepreneurial activities. This will include designing, developing and delivering high-quality teaching activities, undertaking individual and joint research to produce high-quality academic outputs, and participating in external activity to generate income and promote the subject.

The Department has particular strengths in four core research areas: Renewable Energy Systems, Smart Materials & Surfaces, Transport and Aerospace Engineering and Extreme Environment Engineering, with financial support from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), The Royal Society, Innovate UK, and European Union. We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with cross-disciplinary strengths in any of the following areas:

  • Materials, including material mechanics, smart materials and composites.
  • Transport and Aerospace Engineering, including fluid dynamics, aerodynamics and green and intelligent transport.
  • Renewable Energy and Sustainable Engineering including battery technologies, photovoltaics and energy storage and conversion systems.
  • Extreme Environment Engineering.

However, we will consider high-quality applications in any relevant area.

As a senior Academic colleague, you will assist the Faculty Pro Vice-Chancellor to maintain and enhance the University’s national and international reputation in your academic field. You must demonstrate continuing academic achievement and provide academic leadership (of your subject and associated colleagues) through active contribution to your discipline and to the life and work of the Faculty and the wider University. This will include contributing to significant change within practice, the discipline, profession and/or community at regional, national and international levels.

To be successful in this role you will have externally recognised research outputs of a quality that are internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance and rigour, and demonstrable success in securing research funding at both national and international levels. You should also demonstrate academic leadership experience and strong standing with external bodies and internationally renowned academic networks in your field.
