Job Details

Working within the Department of Architecture and Built Environment you will provide expertise in an area of the Built Environment to further enhance research, teaching and entrepreneurial activities. This will include undertaking individual and joint research to produce high-quality academic outputs, designing, developing and delivering high-quality teaching activities, and participating in external activity to generate income and promote the subject.

The Department has particular research strengths in socio-technical aspects of the built environment including Digital Construction and Building Information Modelling (BIM), People and Place, including future homes and Sustainable Construction. Staff support the regional International Centre for Connected Construction (IC3) initiative and BIM Academy, a successful spinout company co-managed with Ryder Architecture. The role holder will contribute to research activities in alignment with these areas of strength and our REF 2021 Unit of Assessment 13 submission, where 49.6 FTE were submitted, 83% of the staff in the Department, to build upon our areas of research excellence and entrepreneurial activities.

Aligning with and/or expanding the research strength above, we are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with expertise in any of the following areas:

  • Digital Construction, including BIM.
  • Decarbonising the Built Environment, including sustainable construction and adaptive reuse.
  • Surveying subjects, including building performance and pathology, real estate investment, finance and valuation and construction economics, quantification and procurement.

However, we will consider high-quality applications in any relevant teaching or research areas, though candidates should demonstrate a fit to Building Surveying, Real Estate, Quantity Surveying, Construction or Project Management to strengthen and consolidate our existing subject areas.

The successful candidate must hold a first degree and be qualified to doctoral level in a relevant discipline, with specialist knowledge gained through research activity, professional practice or consultancy. A proven ability to deliver high quality research and teaching is essential, together with a publication profile and track record of bidding for external income that is appropriate for the post.
