2022 Early Career Fellowships

Early Career Fellowships offer a three-year salaried post for researchers at the beginning of their academic career, providing them with the opportunity for career advancement and enabling them to undertake a significant piece of original publishable research.

In response to the financial challenges facing the Higher Education sector in the forthcoming academic year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Trust has adjusted the value of the awards for the 2022 round. The Trust will contribute 100% of each Fellow’s total salary costs up to a maximum of £50,000 in year one of the award. The Trust will then contribute 50% of the Fellow’s total salary costs up to a maximum of £25,000 in years two and
three, with the balance to be paid by the host institution. The Trust’s maximum annual contribution will be pro-rated if the Fellowship is held on a part-time basis. Research expenses of £6,000 a year are also available.

To be eligible, applicants must either have a degree from a UK university or
currently hold an academic post in the UK. Applicants must have submitted their doctoral thesis not more than four years before the application closing date of 24 February 2022. Special consideration will be given to applicants who have taken a break in their academic career. Those currently registered for a doctorate may apply only if they have submitted their doctoral thesis by the closing date.

Applications must be made with the support of a host institution.

Fellowships are tenable for three years on a full-time basis and must begin between 1 September 2022 and 1 May 2023. The Trust will support requests to hold the award part-time over a proportionately longer period for health related reasons, disability or childcare commitments.
