Senior Research Manager

Salary range – £49,810 to £56,690 per annum (dependent on skills/experience)

Full time

Permanent

Ref: GS637

The Guildhall School of Music & Drama is one of the world’s leading conservatoires and drama schools, offering musicians, actors, stage managers and theatre technicians an inspiring environment in which to develop as artists and professionals. It is currently ranked as the top conservatoire in the Guardian University Guide music league table and second in the Complete University Guide arts, drama and music league table.

Following a period of rapid expansion over the last REF cycle, Guildhall School is now undertaking a review of its Research and Innovation infrastructure, and an exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced research manager to work alongside the Head of Research in the implementation of the new research strategy 2021–26. The successful candidate will join an increasingly flourishing Research, Innovation and Engagement environment, overseeing operational matters relating to research activity across the School in a relatively hands-on way, and in the first twelve months contributing to the redesign of the Research Office team, its relationship with colleagues in Innovation working on knowledge exchange initiatives, and supporting the further embedding of equality and diversity in its culture. There is scope for the role to evolve into a Head of the Research Office position in the future.

As with similar roles at other Small Specialist Institutions, this is a position that requires a relatively wide knowledge of Research Office functions, and a willingness to develop expertise in others (including e.g. both pre-award and post-award), in order to be able to support the full range of higher education research management processes. Though in this sense broad, the scope of the role is focused on a very specialist subject area (notwithstanding a keen appetite for interdisciplinary research), and the research community is still relatively small (headcount 33/FTE 19 in REF2021): the volume of work will reflect this. The post-holder will line-manage staff with responsibility for particular parts of Research Office activity but the team of five is small enough for some sharing of tasks to be necessary, and for all members of it to be broadly familiar with each other’s workload. Thus the role offers the chance for an ambitious individual to develop a complete skill-set and, in particular, to take operational responsibility for preparing a world-leading institution for the next REF.

Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact the Head of Research for a preliminary confidential discussion: Cormac.Newark@GSMD.ac.uk.
