Two vacancies exists for Burnham Lecturers (BLs) Avionics in Academic Principles Organisation (APO) at the Defence School of Aeronautical Engineering (DSAE) at RAF Cosford.

DSAE BLs deliver the academic subjects to students of the No. 1 School of Technical Training, No. 1 Radio School and the Aero-systems Engineer & Management Training School. We have a vacancy for an Avionic lecturer to prepare future Defence Engineering professionals for the technological challenges they face both now and in the future. The school operates 08:30 to 17:00 Mon-Thu and 08:30 to 16:30 Fridays.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

The successful candidate will be responsible for primarily delivering Avionic and Electrical Principles and related topics to RAF Further and Direct Entry Trainees and International Defence Training students on a City & Guilds level 3 Technician course. There will also be a requirement to teach Avionic/Electrical Principles or Mathematics on the department's level 5 Foundation Degree programme to prospective engineering officer cadets. There is an aspiration to increase programme to level 6 Bachelor’s Degree. Applicants should be qualified to deliver from the following subjects: Engineering Management, Electrical Principles, Mathematics, Communications, Radar and Flight Systems.

Responsibilities

The applicant should be a qualified educational deliverer with a track record of success in delivering aeronautical/aero-systems engineering theory.

Ideally, the candidate should have experience and knowledge on distributed learning, remote delivery techniques and the use of a VLE.

Responsibilities include:

• Delivery of technical and management training (theory and practical) to City & Guilds Apprenticeship Level 3 and Level 5 Foundation Degree standards.
• Preparing student reports on performance (academic and behavioural).
• Preparing and conducting practical assessments, including marking and recording.
• Developing and controlling training documents and delivery media.
• Proposing improvements to training design and content.
• General course administration.
• Additional support duties essential for the safe conduct of training and welfare of students.

The post holder will be expected to diversify across other trade related topic specialisms after suitable training to improve flexibility and increase capability building business resilience.

Associated duties include:

• Maintaining, developing and reviewing training packages.
• Act as a lead role as Subject Advisor (SA).
• Lecturers routinely propose/identify new training aids.
• Complete Quality Self Audits.
• Undertake other departmental projects.
• Operate Ground Training Aid equipment and maintain currency in local engineering authorisations.
• The lecturer may have Line Management and Reporting Officer responsibilities for appropriate staff in the APO organisation.

Qualifications

Entry requirements to the BL Group will normally be a minimum of a degree or equivalent in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) subject expertise or either a Management or an Education degree and an extensive background in STEM subjects. Exceptionally, candidates with significant experience of delivery may be allowed entry with Level 4 qualifications but should be supported to obtain level 5 if practicable.

In addition to this, a teaching qualification that equates to at least level 5 on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) i.e. Cert Ed, is required. (The Postgraduate Certificate in Education is at level 6 on the QCF and is desirable.) In exceptional circumstances, individuals may be recruited to the BL Group without such a teaching qualification. In this case there should be an agreement as part of the job offer that a teaching qualification will be undertaken and should be completed within two standard academic years. Successful achievement of the qualification is a requirement to retain employment.

Evidence of qualification will be required at interview.
