Project description

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common viral infection that affects mostly infants and children below 5 years of age. The main causative agents responsible for HFMD belong to the Picornaviridae family, and consist predominantly of coxsackievirus type A (CA) strains (CA16 and CA6), and enterovirus 71 (EV71). EV71-associated HFMD can lead to neurological complications that may be fatal or result in neurological sequelae. The lack of effective therapeutic and prophylactic options is closely associated with our limited understanding of EV71 pathogenesis.

This research project aims to study the molecular mechanisms involved in EV71 neuropathogenesis. Animal models and in vitro assays will be used to identify key viral determinants and host factors.  A research assistant position is available to support an existing team of 3 members in this endeavour.

Expertise/attributes required:

  • Bachelor degree in Life Sciences (biomedical sciences preferred)
  • Minimum 1-year experience in a research lab
  • Expertise in mouse work would be a plus
  • Hardworking, dedicated, tidy and organized
  • Team player; open-minded.
