You will join the School of Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering that has inter-disciplinary research interests across four departments. We have complementary strengths in additive manufacturing, bioengineering, computational modelling, energy technologies, materials, mechatronics and tribology. We have new laboratories for testing materials and structures (TSRL) across different scales using state-of-the-art imaging techniques (e.g. m-VIS and Photodyn) as well as defining leading edge industrially relevant approaches. Additional information about these labs can be found in the links below. The successful candidate is expected to be a major user of these experimental facilities.

You will have research and teaching interests/experience in Mechanics of Materials and Experimental Mechanics. We are especially interested in candidates with complementary expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Complex service life assessments and prediction techniques.
  • Design, manufacture (including additive manufacture for enhanced structural response) and testing of advanced structural materials.
  • Development of innovative testing methodologies based on:  full-field deformation measurements, ultra-high speed imaging for high strain rate testing, Thermal Stress Analysis (TSA)

You should include a research statement, a teaching and citizenship statement highlighting areas of interest in education and willingness to contribute to departmental operations and a diversity statement addressing your commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusivity. You can enter these statements in the textboxes provided in the online application form. Alternately, upload documents (no more than 1 page per statement) and provide a summary of these statements in the textboxes. All three statements are required for your application to be considered. As part of these statements, candidates should evidence:

  • Future research interests/plans (including grant capture)
  • Past research activities demonstrated by journal publications and funding portfolio
  • their ability to develop/deliver modules with innovative teaching and assessment approaches
  • that they are caring and can support students (UG/PG) and colleagues
  • that they can work well in a diverse team and can build an inclusive department
  • that they have potential to lead activities relevant to the department (administration and outreach)

The successful candidate will be appointed as either a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) or Associate Professor in Mechanics of Materials/Experimental Mechanics.
