Position overview

Transformational change is required to limit climate change to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, as agreed in the Paris Climate Agreement. Reducing our greenhouse gas emissions to zero as soon as possible is essential, but this effort alone is no longer enough to limit temperature increases to globally agreed levels. As a society, we will also need to implement approaches and technologies that sequester greenhouse gases from the atmosphere for the long term.

Currently ANU emits significant quantities of greenhouse gases (GHGs), contributing to one of the greatest challenges the world has ever faced: climate change. Our goal is to transition ANU from being part of the problem to becoming part of the solution – from a source of GHG to a net absorber of GHG (a sink for GHG). At the same time, through integrating real-life emissions reductions and GHG removal with our world-leading research and teaching on climate change and energy, we can fast-track new and innovative approaches.

The ANU Below Zero Initiative was launched in 2020 by the ANU Council and the University has since then established ambitious greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. The Initiative is now at a maturation point where a strategic portfolio of projects and actions has been identified to reach the ANU commitments. This initial portfolio covers a wide range of ANU activities, which requires a mix of academic and operational expertise and a programmatic approach to be delivered successfully. The Program Coordinator is part of the core team coordinating and supporting this important piece of work.

The Program Coordinator will provide strategic coordination to the Below Zero Initiative and its constituent streams of work. This will include but is not limited to scoping, prioritising and managing a range of projects from inception to benefit realisation; fostering engagement with, and support for, the Below Zero Initiative across the University; maintaining critical program documentation; and supporting the communication and outreach activities of the Below Zero Initiative.
