Role Description

Cranfield University is seeking new members to join our governing body, known as the Council.  The Council is responsible for the University’s overall strategy, organisational structure and for its finances, property and investments.

As an Independent Member of Council you will carry out a vitally important role for the University and you will have the opportunity to be actively involved in transforming our strategy into reality.   To be successful you will be able to demonstrate that you support Cranfield’s values of Ambition, Impact, Respect and Community, as well as the values of UK higher education and Cranfield’s distinctive position in the sector.    Our Council members  engage constructively as part of an inclusive non-executive team.  You will have a clear understanding of corporate collective responsibility and be able to uphold the Nolan Principals. While Council members are charity trustees, the role is like that of non-executive director.

To complement our existing Council membership, we are particularly keen to hear from current practitioners in industry with experience of large site, large scale technologies, or familiar with best practice in Health and Safety in areas relevant to Cranfield, for example hydrogen and other hazardous materials.  You will be able to advise on industry legislation and ideally have previous board-level experience but this is not essential.  Your expertise and insight will have a direct impact on society at large through Cranfield’s world leading research and unique student experience.

Council meets at least four times a year and all Council members are expected to sit on at least one sub-committee.  These include Finance; Audit; Remuneration; Nominations and Honorary Degree committees.

In return for your time, expertise, and perspectives we can offer you the chance to:

  • make an impact on society at large;
  • become part of an inclusive, engaged Council and develop professional networks;
  • develop your board-level, non executive experience and hone your strategic skills.

Please note, this is not a remunerated position but expenses are covered.

At Cranfield we value Diversity and Inclusion, and aim to create and maintain a culture in which everyone can work and study together harmoniously with dignity and respect and realise their full potential.  We particularly welcome applicants from black or minority ethnic backgrounds who are underrepresented within Council at Cranfield University.

Further information about Council is available here.

You can read more about Cranfield’s values here.

A role description and person specification can be found as a pdf document attached to this advertisement.

You should apply with a full curriculum vitae and a covering letter setting out how you fulfil the person specification, stating clearly how you will manage the commitment required of the role.  Please submit your application to council@cranfield.ac.uk
